ALASKA AND POWERADE POWER NATIONAL BOXERS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Dec 2009 Members of the Philippine national boxing team to the coming 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos are now experiencing an extra spring in their step by the boost given by two companies whose products now form part of the pugilists' daily diet. Alaska Milk Corporation, through its president Wilfred Steven Uytengsu and Powerade, through Coca Cola Public Affairs and Communications vice president JB Baylon, answered the call for much-needed nutritional supplements for the national boxers under the care of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP). Alaska is supplying the daily milk requirements while Powerade rehydrates the national boxers, per recommendation of nutritionist-dietitian Jeaneth Aro,RND, who was commissioned by ABAP to provide boxing-specific dietary recommendations for its athletes. Ms. Aro trekked to the PSC Baguio facility in Teacher's Camp, where the boxers train the whole year round, to observe the activities and nutritional intake of the national boxers. She then recommended adjustments in their meals to ensure optimum performance and swift recovery from their rigorous daily regimen. Apprised that the boxers needed quality products to augment their dietary needs, the ABAP sought out Alaska and Powerade. The response was immediate and the boxers got the products within a couple of days after the request was made. Representing the country in the biennial meet which starts December 9 are pinweight Bill Vicera, light flyweight Harry Tanamor, flyweight Rey Saludar, bantamweight Joan Tipon, featherweight Charly Suarez and lightweight Joegin Ladon in the men's division. The women boxers are light fly Josie Gabuco, flyweight Alice Kate Aparri, bantamweight Annie Albania and lightweight Mitchel Martinez. The 38 other boxers in the national pool are also benefitting from the nutritional support by the two entities. ABAP president Ricky Vargas lauded both companies for their unconditional support. "We are heartened by the quick response by Alaska and Powerade to our call for assistance to our national boxers, no questions asked. This kind of commitment for a national effort deserves to be commended and emulated. Along with the long-standing backing of Smart and PLDT, their help will go a long way in steeling our athletes for the tough grind ahead in the SEA Games. Mabuhay ang Alaska at Powerade!" |
