DEVON ALEXANDER, A PACQUIAO LOTTERY LONG SHOT

PhilBoxing.com

Devon Alexander, who?

Outside of the world of hard-core boxing fans, the name Devon Alexander would not trigger a minuscule blip on any “name recognition radar” screen. In fact, even in his hometown of St. Louis, a certified baseball town where Albert Pujols is a royalty, very few souls would probably know that this world champion boxer lives within their midst. St. Louisan may recognize the name Spinks, but not an Alexander.

Compared to Manny Pacquiao, boxing’s pound for pound King, a superstar athlete and ranked number 22nd as Time Magazine’s 2009 Most Influential Person of the World (outranking Obama #37), Devon is practically a virtual unknown. You Google him and a mere couple of hits about him would show up.

Why do I wish Devon to be Pacquiao’s future ring partner? Well, I am from St. Louis and it would be a thrill to have St. Louis to be in the boxing limelight once again. It would be great to experience and relive the glory days when the Spinks brothers, Leon and Michael roamed the streets of St. Louis and brought so much boxing recognition to the Gateway City. Now Devon Alexander and Cory Spinks could potentially bring back those wonderful memories.

With so many high profile boxers, like Mayweather, Juan Manuel Marquez, Valero, Bradley and including Shane Mosley virtually on bended knees, lining up to be Pacquiao’s next opponent , Devon’s chances are basically slim to none.

But, there is a possibility.

Devon is very young being only 22 years old. He has all the time in the world to wait for this great opportunity. He has a lot more to learn and he will get better. He has shown a lot of maturity in his win against Witter, the Quitter. The very awkward and unconventional veteran fighter could have easily flummoxed Devon, but as the fight went on, he adjusted and performed remarkably well albeit not in spectacular fashion.

Pacquiao will more than likely have two, at most three fights before he retires then he would focus on his dream of being a Congressman. During this time, he will also be busy and immerse himself on being an uber celebrity, actor, singer, pitchman, philanthropist and a Philippine Hero.

Then the boxing itch slowly creeps in.

After being away for 3-4 years and badly missing the smell of sweat at Wild Card Gym, the surge of adrenaline with each punch and the adulation of screaming fans at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Manny will come back.

By that time, Manny will be a rested 34 year-old and Devon will be a polished 26 year-old veteran. Manny will need a legitimate world-class opponent to stage a comeback.

With all the stars aligned including an improbable agreement between Bob Arum’s Top Rank and Don King Promotions, Devon Alexander will get the call.

Well, it might just be a dream but who knows, it could happen.
