2008 PHILIPPINE BOXING INTERNATIONAL TITLISTS By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Thu, 01 Jan 2009 The year that passed was a very fruitful year for Philippine boxing. It was bannered by the three big victories of Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao. But other boxers also grabbed the limelight by winning some international title fights. They are as follows: Dec. 14 - Harry Tanamor won the lightflyweight gold medal at the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) World Cup in Moscow. Dec. 7 ? Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao retains No.1 pound-for-pound title by punishing Oscar ?Golden Boy? de la Hoya and won by TKO victory at the end of the 8th round in the Dream Match in Las Vegas. Nov. 26 - Pan Asian Boxing Association super flyweight champion Richard Garcia won by unanimous decision against Japan?s Kenji Yoshida in Tokyo. Nov. 11 - Julius Alcos won the Asian Boxing Council International light flyweight title in a twelve round unanimous decision over China?s Xiong Zhao Zhong in Chengu, China. Nov. 2 - Nonito Donaire Jr. retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown when he won by TKO in the 6th round over South African Moruti Mthalane in Las Vegas. Oct. 31 - WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight champion Milan Melindo won a 3rd round TKO over Juma Fundi of Tanzania in Cagayan de Oro. Oct. 4 - Anthony ?Rocky? Marcial won the WBO super featherweight interim title via a 3rd round TKO over Thai fighter Thong Thai Rajanondh. Jhonreil Casimiro scored a 5th round TKO over another Thai Liempetch Sor Veerapol to win the vacant WBO Asia Pacific junior flyweight title in Talisay City, Cebu. Sept. 28 - North American Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Bernabe Concepcion knocked out Mexican Giovanni Caro in the eighth round in El Cajon, California. Aug. 29 - Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista won by KO over Mexican Eden Marquez to retain his WBO Intercontinental superbantamweight title. WBO minimumweight champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes defended his title with a second-round stoppage of Nicaraguan Eddy Castro. Aug. 3 - Bobby Pacquiao won an 8th-round knockout victory over Thailand's Decho Bankluaygym to win the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight crown in Cebu City. Jul. 8 - Jason Egera won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific bantam title with a seventh-round stoppage of Pichitchok Singmanassak in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. Jun. 29 - Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao won with a crushing knockout in the ninth round over WBC lightweight champion David Diaz in Las Vegas to wrest the crown. Jun. 22 - Sonny Boy Jaro has won the vacant Orient Pacific Boxing Federation light flyweight title via a split decision over Along Denoy in Palawan. Jun. 15 - Richie Mepranum won the vacant WBO Oriental flyweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision over Juma Seleman Fundi of Tanzania in Maasim, Sarangani. May 31 - Jason Pagara won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth lightweight title over Indonesian Heri Andriyanto by TKO at the start of the third round in Cebu City. May 3 - Bert Batawang took the vacant WBO Oriental light flyweight title with a fourth-round, one-punch knockout over Thai Samransak Singmanassak in Cebu City. Apr. 27 - NABF superbantamweight champ Bernabe Concepcion defended his title with a second round TKO win over Torrence Daniels in Queretaro, Mexico. Apr. 26 - Eusebio Baluarte Jr. won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth junior welterweight title with a first-round TKO over Thailand's Yai Sithsaithong in Cagayan de Oro City. Apr. 6 - WBO bantamweight king Gerry Penalosa knocked out Thailand?s Ratanachai Sor Vorapin in the eighth round at the Araneta Coliseum. Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista won by TKO over Mexican Genaro Camargo in the second round to retain his WBO Intercontinental superbantamweight title. Mar. 16 ? Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao was crowned WBC super featherweight champion after escaping a split decision win over Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas. Feb. 24 - Eric Canoy won the WBO Oriental featherweight title with a ninth-round technical knockout over Tanzanian Rajabu Maoja in Zamboanga City. Feb. 9 - Ciso "Kid Terrible" Morales outpointed Indonesian Marangin Marbun to win the WBO Asia Pacific Youth and WBO Oriental superbantam titles in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.
