SAN MANUEL, TARLAC---Rian Edora bested Romer Ceron Jr. in a duel of fancied bets in the seventh round to capture the 13 and under division while Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. and Randal Kurt Orduna ruled their respective divisions in the 1st San Manuel Tarlac Chess Tournament 2023 at Cultural Center, San Manuel, Tarlac on Saturday, March 25, 2023.

The 13-year-old Edora, a grade 8 student of Taltal National High School, Masinloc, Zambales who trailed Ceron by half-a-point after six rounds, outwitted her rival from Rosales, Pangasinan in the end game with the white to fashion out the victory then disposed of Vince Mark Gabrillo of Dagupan, Pangasinan in the tie break points to emerge champion in the 13 years old and below category with 6.5 points.

"I didn’t expect to win on a tie-break. The field of players is very strong. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my performance," said Edora, playing under the guidance of Mayor Arsenya Lim and coach Ferdinand Domansi.

The second seed Suelo, who shared the Open category lead with top seed Sherwin Tiu after six rounds, drew with the latter to top the Open category with 6.0 points.

Actually, Suelo, Tiu, International Master Ronald Bancod, and Kelly Rancap figured in a four-way tie for first place, however, the former won the title by virtue of higher tie break points.

Adjudged category winners were Heart Padilla from Zambales (top lady) and Eduardo Suarez (top senior).

On hand during the awards rite were Jestoni Tolentino, Jaasiel Laine Abalos-Tolentino and Alfred Miranda, who organized the said 1-day rapid chess event in cooperation with mayor Donya Tesoro.
