Tristan Jared Cervero wins Philippine Xiangqi tournament By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 12 Aug 2025 Tristan Jared Cervero bagged the Group B or All Filipino category title in the 19th Thousand Island Cup Philippine Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Open tournament at the Eastern Athletic Association, Mezzanine, Cathay Mansions Building, Room M-103, 1407 Mayhaligue Street, Sta. Cruz, Manila on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The 26-year-old Interdisciplinary Studies Ateneo de Manila University graduate student finished the tournament with 6 wins and 3 losses to enroute the title. For his victory, Cervero earned PHP10,000 in the event jointly organized by the Philippine Xiangqi Federation Headed by It's President Chen Peidun and the Eastern Athletic Association. “Actually, I didn't expect to win because there are many good players and my mindset is I will just play regardless of the results of my performance in the tournament," said Cervero, one of the leading chess players in Marikina City. "Winning the Xiangqi tournament was a great experience because I was able to apply the same calculation skills I use in regular chess," he added. Rounding up to the top six (6) were Jennah Frias, Sem Canasta, Klien Cantomayor, Angelo Young and Darwin Padrigone. Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Chen Peidun stated that the competition aims not only to foster young talent but also to instill critical life skills in children. “Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) improves critical thinking, builds resilience, and promotes discipline and focus in children from an early age,” Peidun remarked. With enthusiastic participation and commendable performances across all categories, the tournament underscored the growing impact of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) as a tool for childhood development," said Xiangqi Master Jackson Hong. International Grandmaster Engr.
