Abelgas finishes second in Asian Amateur Chess Championships By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Aug 2025 Hongkong, China---FIDE Master (FM) Roel Abelgas of the Philippines finished in second place at the Asian Amateur Chess Championships 2025. Abelgas had five wins and four draws at the end of the FIDE Standard tournament Under 2300 category that ended last Saturday, August 9, 2025. It’s an honor to represent our country,” said Abelgas, head coach of the famous Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of Mayor Jenny Barzaga. Abelgas defeated Yegeon Kim of South Korea (Round 1), FIDE Master Zhuban Bigabylov of Kazakhstan (Round 2), Junyu Zuo of China (Round 3), R Sham of India (Round 6), and FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz of the Philippines (Round 9). He split the points with eventual champion FIDE Master Khishigbat Ulziikhishig of Mongolia (Round 4), Yuyang Wei of China (Round 5), FIDE Master Ekaterina Borisova of Russia (Round 7) and FIDE Master Ganbat Tenguundalai of Mongolia (Round 8). FM Ulziikhishig (7.5 points) took the gold medal plus the top prize of 12,000 Hongkong Dollar, FM Abelgas (7.0 points) won the silver medal plus the runner-up prize of 10,000 Hongkong Dollar while another Filipino entry FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri (6.5 points) got the bronze plus the third prize of 8,000 Hongkong Dollar. Jan Clifford Labog and Paul Christian Barroga topped the Under 2000 and Under 1700 divisions, respectively. Other Filipino players made it to the top 10 were FM Daluz (10th place, Under 2300 category), Irwin Aton (7th place, Under 2000), Aaron Aton (8th place, Under 2000), Emir Gamis (2nd place, Under 1700), Djon Carlos Francis Cortes (3rd place, Under 1700), and Mark Vincent Nuella (7th place, Under 1700). Jose Piff Caumban finished 11th place in the Under 1700 category. Meanwhile, Consul General Romulo Victor M.
