JOVEN OUSTS FORMER WORLD CHAMP WU IN WPC

PhilBoxing.com

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES -- A day after crushing compatriot Dennis Orcollo, 10-6, Joven Bustamante pulled another big upset win and this time defeating ex-World Pool Champion Wu Chia-ching of Taiwan, 10-8, to advance into round-of-16 at the Big Dome Thursday night.

The 28-year-old Joven, distant relative of former world no. 1 Francisco "Django" Bustamante, won the opening lag and took a 4-0 commanding lead before the Taiwanese prodigy closed the match at 4-3 winning the next three racks. However, the former Pinoy house pro in the Middle East clustered three consecutive racks for a 7-3 lead. Joven had a chance to put the lead at 8-3 count but suffered his fourth unforced error that gave Wu a chance to slice the lead at 7-4 before the latter tied the match at 7-all.

"Sobrang hirap ang dinaanan ko," said Joven, the 2007 World 8-ball semi-finalist in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates last February.

"Pero lumalakas 'yung loob natin lalo na nakita ko kung gaano ka full support 'yung mga kababayan natin sa paglalalaro namin," added Joven, also scheduled to play in the Korean 9-ball event on November 12, after the finals of WPC on Nov. 11.

Joven, the 2007 Korea Pro Tour champion, will face the winner of the match between 2005 Manila SEA Games 9-ball gold medalist Luong Chi-dung of Vietnam and 2006 Doha Asian games 8-ball gold medalist Satoshi Kawabata of Japan.

As of press time, four Filipino campaigners slug it out in the round-of-32, as Jeffrey de Luna facing Konstantin Stepanov of Russia, Roberto Gomez goes up against Chao Fong-pao of Taiwan, Django Bustamante will test the mettle of Nick Van Den Berg of the Netherlands and Alex Pagulayan, the 2004 WPC winner facing Louis Condo of Australia.

At the end of the round-of-64 last Wednesday, only five Filipino gladiators survived in the knock-out stage as heavy favorites and defending champion Ronato Alcano, 1999 World 9-ball champion Efren "Bata" Reyes, last year's Doha Asian Games 9-ball gold medalist Antonio "Ga-Ga" Gabica, 2007 BCA Enjoypool.com winner Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo, current national champion Lee Vann "The Slayer" Corteza, ex-Asian 9-ball tour winner Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego, 1999 SEA Games four gold medal Leonardo "The Rattle Snake" Andam and 2005 WPC third placer Marlon "Marvelous" Manalo was booted out in the total pot $400,000 tournament which will be aired world wide in ESPN.

Alcano bowed to Daryl Peach of England, Reyes succumbed to Konstatin Stepanov of Russia, 10-5, Gabica yielded to reigning US Open winner Shane Van Boening of the United States, 7-10, Orcollo was upset by Joven, 10-6, Corteza also got an axe by countyman Jeffrey de Luna, 10-7, Gallego lost to Kuo Po-cheng of Taiwan, 10-5, Andam collapsed to three-time world junior champion Wu Yu-lun of Taiwan, 10-5, and Manalo was hammered out by Radoslaw Babica of Poland, 10-1.
