Davao parade set for Ancajas

PhilBoxing.com

A ticker-tape parade awaits IBF superflyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas as GAB commissioner for administration and finance Fritz Gaston yesterday confirmed on advice of Mayor Sara Duterte?s staff that Davao City will lay out the red carpet for the Panabo, Davao del Norte, fighter who recently retained his title via a seventh round stoppage of Japan?s Teiru Kinoshita in the Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn undercard in Brisbane.

According to Gaston, the Davao City sports council is organizing a parade, press conference and courtesy calls on Mayor Duterte and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte tomorrow (Tuesday, July 11). GAB chairman Abraham Mitra, Gaston and commissioner for operations Eduard Trinidad will fly in from Manila to attend the celebration on a day trip. Trinidad, who is from Davao, coordinated the program with the sports council. Ancajas' manager Joven Jimenez said a courtesy call on Sen. Manny Pacquiao is also being arranged on another date. With Pacquiao?s loss to Horn, the Philippines is left with three reigning world champions----Ancajas, IBF lightflyweight titlist Milan Melindo and IBF flyweight ruler Donnie Nietes.

The win over Kinoshita deposited a purse of $60,000 in Ancajas? bank account. It was the biggest paycheck in his career. Ancajas, 25, was paid $3,700 for wresting the IBF crown from McJoe Arroyo in Taguig last September and $40,000 for repulsing Jose Alfredo Rodriguez in his first defense in Macau last January. Ancajas said he?ll save his earnings to provide for the future of his wife Ruth and their children Jhinjie Kyrie, 4, and J. J. Kyle, 2. His two sons are named after NBA players Kyrie Irving and Kyle Korver.

Jimenez said international matchmaker Sean Gibbons will confer with Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum on what?s next in Ancajas? agenda. Gibbons intends to fly Ancajas and Jimenez to watch a Sept. 9 card in California where WBC superflyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai will take on Roman (Chocolatito) Gonzalez in a rematch. Ancajas hopes to challenge the winner to a unification showdown. The card will also feature WBO superflyweight titleholder Naoya Inoue?s sixth defense against Antonio Nieves and a duel between former WBC superflyweight champion Carlos Cuadras and former WBO/WBA flyweight king Juan Francisco Estrada.

Before the Kinoshita fight, Ancajas promised to unravel a secret weapon which turned out to be a right uppercut to the side of the body. The blow sent Kinoshita down for a mandatory eight-count in the seventh round. Kinoshita got up but referee Ignatius Missalidis waved it off as blood trickled from his nose and his right eye was swollen shut. The challenger was in no condition to continue.

Ancajas said he was surprised when Kinoshita went down. ?Matiisin siya, malakas, matapang at hindi sumusuko,? he said. ?Noong bumagsak, alam ko babangon siya. Tinigil na lang ng referee kasi nakapikit na ang kanyang kanang mata.? Ancajas said he?s looking forward to his first trip to the US and the chance to face Gonzalez if he regains the throne from Srisaket.

Jimenez said he wasn?t worried about Ancajas failing to make the 115-pound limit although the fighter had to lose 10 pounds in nine days leading to the weigh-in. To reduce his weight, Ancajas was fed a diet of beef soup, fruits, vegetables and rice.

Jimenez said he told Ancajas to be patient in looking for the opening to attack. Ancajas? stablemate Drian Francisco said Kinoshita changed his mode of attack to throw off the champion. In the tape that the Ancajas camp studied of Kinoshita, the challenger used hit-and-run tactics against South African Zolani Tete. But against Ancajas, Kinoshita went for broke and engaged. It took a few rounds for Ancajas to adjust but when he found his range, Kinoshita was a goner.

Jimenez said in training for Kinoshita, he anticipated a switch in tactics. ?Preparado kami,? he said. ?Kung tumakbo si Kinoshita o makipagsabayan, alam ni Jerwin kung anong gagawin niya. Hindi siya nagmadali. Ang ganda ng kaniyang kinilos.? The victory raised Ancajas? record to 27-1-1, with 18 KOs and upped his winning streak to 14 straight fights, 13 inside the distance.
