MELINDO-PETALCORIN BOUT COULD TAKE PLACE IN MELBOURNE By Peter Maniatis PhilBoxing.com Thu, 25 May 2017 ![]() Newly crowned IBF light flyweight world champion Milan Melindo is celebrating in Cebu with ALA Promotions and enjoying the victory, after all the hard work has paid off since turning professional in 2005 and with 38 bouts to date. In General Santos City at the Sanman Gym, former WBA interim World Light Flyweight Champion Randy Petalcorin just watched the live link of Melindo winning the IBF Light Flyweight world title in devastating fashion in Japan. Petalcorin last week became a father for the first time with a baby son. Petalcorin will be the #3 ranked in the next IBF listing with #1 and #2 spots vacant so he will be the next highest name rated to fight Melindo. "Well done Melindo on winning so well. Congrats but now I would like to fight him for his IBF title," said Petalcorin. Melindo has 9 months before he has to meet his mandatory IBF defense and in the mean time Melindo can fight a voluntary defense and chose any opponent listed. Petalcorin, rated IBF #3, hopes to get a shot at the newly crowed champion as voluntary challenger next. Two weight division world champion Gerry Penalosa on Monday at the Elorde boxing gym, while watching senator Manny Pacquaio train, said, "What a top win from Melindo. Will be good to see Petalcorin fight Melindo for a all Filipino world title fight. That will be a great fight." Sanman Gym CEO Jim Claude Manangquil said, "Randy has been wanting to fight Melindo for years. Let's just make the fight happen. Everybody wants to see who is the best light flyweight in the Philippines," Said Managquil. The IBF world title fight could take place in September in Melbourne, the sporting capital of the world. Melbourne hosted the Australia Open Tennis, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and AFL Grand Final. The fight with Melido versu Petalcorin could be held in neutral ground in Melbourne and with only 2 hours forward the time zone in Melbourne and Manila, it would be perfect to have the fight beamed back live to the Philippines on TV. I spoke with IBF Australia representative Ben Keilty about the possibility of a Melindo vs Petalcorin fight in Australia and he agreed the fight would be big for Filipino and Australian boxing. Petalcorin has fought 3 times in Melbourne since 2013 and all his fights where sold out so he has a fan base in Australia already.
