BOXING TRIVIA: EX-WBC LIGHT FLYWEIGHT CHAMP EDGAR SOSA By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Wed, 21 Sep 2016 ![]() Edgar Sosa won the WBC lightflyweight title by winning over former champion Brian Viloria by unanimous decision. Sosa later successfully defend his title ten times. On November 21, 2009, Sosa lost the belt to Rodel Mayol. In the second round, Sosa was badly headbutted by Mayol, falling to the canvas and causing an injury which was later diagnosed to be a triple-fracture. On May 16, 2015, he fought Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez, the WBC flyweight king, and lost by second round TKO after being knocked down thrice. Sosa will face Donnie "Ahas" Nietes on September 24, 2016 at the StubHub Center, Carson, California for the vacant WBO inter-continental flyweight title. * * * Irish boxer Michael Conlan, who heavily criticized AIBA of corruption when he lost in a controversial decision at the 2016 Rio Olympics, recently turned professional and joined Top Rank. His achievements include an Olympic bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics at flyweight and a World Championships bantamweight gold medal at Doha in 2015. Conlan won the 2015 European Championships at bantamweight and awarded Boxer of the Tournament. He won the bantamweight gold medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. * * * Liam Smith, who recently lost to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, held the WBO light-middleweight title from 2015 to 2016. The Liverpool-born fighter also grabbed the Commonwealth light-middleweight crown from 2012 to 2013, and then wore the British light-middleweight belt from 2013 to 2015. As an amateur pugilist, he was a two-time winner of the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) Championships in 2007 and 2008, at light welterweight.
