BUHAIN PROMISES SISONORIO CASE ISN'T CLOSED
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 30 May 2007
Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain has promised that the Lito Sisnorio case in which the 24 year old former WBC Youth flyweight champion died following brain surgery after a battering last March 30 at the hands of former world champion Chatchai Sasakul “is not going to be a closed book.”
After the arrest of Bong Obero who was accused of responsibility for sneaking Sisnorio out of the country and making him fight despite lack of authority from the GAB, there have been fears that others involved in the illegal recruitment of boxers will not be penalized.
Buhain allayed those fears in an interview with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today indicating that “a long investigation is going to happen.” He also revealed that Obero is “going to make a statement and I am sure its going to provide a lot of information that will pretty much help us stop this illegal activity.”
There were other names mentioned by promoters and boxing managers who held a dialogue with Buhain and boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz at the initiative of Laura Elorde, widow of the late great world junior lightweight champion Gabriel “Flash: Elorde. Among them were Sisonorio’s manager Jemmel Contayoso and former boxer Rex Paciones who worked for Obero.
Buhain also supported a move for boxing promoters and managers to get together and form an association because it would help the GAB “police what is happening with this illegal recruitment.” He also said it would enable the GAB consult the association on certain policies before they are implemented.
Buhain also called on the established promoters and managers to help new promoters and managers interested in getting into boxing.
Ms. Elorde who hosted the affair at the Elorde Sports Complex in Sucat, Paranaque said she was pleased that Buhain “reacted positively” in what she described as a “very friendly get together where we were able to reach decisions without quarreling with each other.”
