BAUTISTA MOVES UP IN RING MAGAZINE RATINGS
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 May 2007
WBO super bantamweight mandatory challenger Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista has moved up in the latest ratings of the prestigious ”Bible” of boxing, Ring Magazine.
Ring’s respected Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Bautista is now rated No. 6 junior featherweight on the basis of his twelve round decision over previously undefeated Argentinean champion Sergio Medina who dropped to No. 7.
Collins who was at ringside for “The World Awaits” mega fight card that has broken all conceivable records in terms of attendance, pay-per-view figures and worldwide coverage said the Bautista battle with Medina was “a very good give-and-take fight” and was “ probably the best of the big Floyd Mayweather Jr - Oscar De La Hoya weekend.”
Collins said he thought Bautista “got a break” when referee Robert Byrd gave him a standing eight-count in the seventh round when he was clearly groggy and held on to the ropes. Collins said Bautista “looked to be in serious trouble” which Bautista himself conceded in post-fight interviews.
However, the Ring Magazine editor-in-chief said he was “impressed by his (Bautista’s) resiliency” and in fact had him ahead by five points on his own unofficial scorecard at the end of the twelve round fight.
Collins said Bautista’s win in the title eliminator was “a very significant win” but emphasized that he is going to need “to improve quite a bit before even thinking about challenging Rafael Marquez” who is recognized as the true 122 pound world champion by Ring Magazine.
However, he said Bautista ”might be ready” for WBO champion Daniel Ponce De Leon who Collins indicated was “very lucky to get the decision over Gerry Penalosa” the former WBC super flyweight champion who gave Ponce De Leon a boxing lesson but lost on the scorecards of the judges.
