MAYWEATHER?S FATHER SAYS DE LA HOYA WON By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 May 2007 The father of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Floyd Sr who watched the mega fight at special ringside at the MGM Grand Garden Arena courtesy of Oscar De La Hoya whom he had trained for six years, disagreed with the split decision which saw his son continue his unbeaten 37 fight winning streak with a split decision win over the Golden Boy. Floyd Mayweather Sr said ?I thought Oscar won the fight on points, threw more punches and was more aggressive.? Mayweather said his son, Floyd Jr ?had good defense and caught a lot of his punches but I still thought Oscar pressed enough to win the fight.? However, two of the judges gave the fight to Mayweather with Chuck Giampa scoring it 116-112, Jerry Roth 115-113 and the third judge Tom Kaczmarek disagreeing by giving the nod to De La Hoya 115-113. Tony Aldeguer of the famed ALA Gym said he couldn?t understand how the judges gave the fight to De La Hoya and said it was "very disappointing," Aldeguer realized that Giampa was the same judge who had also ignored the dominating performance of Z ?The Dream? Gorres against WBC super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel last February 24 in Cebu City and scored the fight for Montiel in what was branded by both local and foreign boxing writers as a robbery. Former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa who was also at the receiving end of a controversial decision in Las Vegas in a title fight with WBO champion Daniel Ponce De Leon told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today ?I cannot understand how Mayweather won. I had De La Hoya a clear winner. He was aggressive while Mayweather was defensive most of the fight.? Well known TV boxing analyst Moy Lainez also said he was convinced that De La Hoya won the fight and was the more aggressive throughout and indicated he ?couldn?t understand? most of the judges in Las Vegas. Boxing fan Henry Cojuangco of the Barangay Ginebra PBA team said he had De La Hoya the winner and asked ?how could they give it to Mayweather. I don?t understand the decision.? However, WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud said he felt Mayweather won but said Mayweather was ?No. 1 in the history of boxing who can make the most exciting fighter into a boring opponent . He will hit you once or twice at the most and doesn?t get hit at all? and he wins. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
