Algieri issues #IceBucketChallenge to Pacquiao By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 Aug 2014 New York ? Before he answers the bell on November 22nd in Macao, China, Chris Algieri is issuing a direct challenge to the man he?ll face in the ring in three months ? welterweight champion and ring icon, Manny Pacquiao. But this is not a call to an early physical confrontation ? that can wait. This is not even a verbal assault or the typical trash talk before the fight. This one is for a worthy cause and Algieri is waiting for the Pacman?s response. Algieri, the unbeaten contender and current World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion from Huntington, New York is luring Pacquiao to what has become a social media and a social movement trend in the United States ? the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge (hashtags: #icebucketchallenge #alsicebucketchallenge, and #strikeoutals) is a social media phenomenon aimed at raising awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig?s Disease. ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects the brain and the spinal cord. It affects 30,000 patients in America alone and has no known cure. The challenge which was a brainchild of another New Yorker, Pat Quinn of Yonkers in honor of his friend Pete Frates, a 29 year-old former Boston College baseball captain who is afflicted by ALS. Frates is now confined to a wheelchair and can no longer walk or speak and requires a full time nurse to help him with his daily activities. As part of the challenge, people across the country are dumping buckets of ice and icy water on their heads and then nominating others to do the same on various platforms of social media. Those who refused are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice, usually within the next 24 hours. The challenge was taken by celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah and even recent Pacquiao impersonator Drake. Sports superstars like Peyton Manning, Lebron James and Sydney Crosby also joined in. Even social media guru Marc Zuckenberg of Facebook and no less than Mr. Microsoft himself - Bill Gates, have also participated. The movement has raised more than 15 million dollars as of Monday according to the ALS Association as compared to 1.8 million during the same period last year. And so today, Algieri took a break from his training and took the challenge and was doused with freezing water and called for Pacquiao to do the same. ?I am not issuing a challenge to anybody else, the only person I am challenging is the person I am challenging on November 22nd, and that is Manny Pacquiao. Enjoy Manny. ?Algieri stated before getting poured over by a bucket of icy water. He then captioned it with??ALS Challenge .. Man I HATE the cold! Sorry Manny ? you are next!!? on his Twitter, Instagram and Tumbler accounts. (See link here: http://instagram.com/p/r2ykiYJnbp/?modal=true) Manny, you are on tap, what is it going to be? The clock is ticking? tick tock, tick tock. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com and is on Twitter @Freemazon910. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rich Mazon . |
