NAGO UPSETS OPBF#2 HONDA
By Joe Koizumi PhilBoxing.com Fri, 23 Mar 2007
TOKYO, JAPAN -- In an encounter of two-time world challengers, Akihiko Nago (28-6-1, 15 KOs), 120, a declining southpaw now even unranked by the JBC, scored an upset majority decision (98-96, 97-95 and 96-96) over OPBF#2 bantam Hidenobu Honda (28-5, 14 KOs), 120.25, over ten on Tuesday, March 20, in Tokyo, Japan.
It was a lousy fight of southpaws, but Nago occasionally threw more powerful shots to the crafty but negative speedster Honda, who seldom scored with effective shots. Nago previously failed to win the WBC and WBA 115-pound belts from Masamori Tokuyama and Hideki Todaka, while Honda couldn't win the WBC fly and WBA super-fly titles from Pongsaklek Wongjongkam and Alexander Munoz.
Undercard:
Unbeaten WBA#15 light-fly Goh Onaga (10-0, 7 KOs), 113.5, eked out a unimpressive but unanimous nod (98-94 twice and 98-95) over Japanese #9 fly Yuki Nasu (13-2, 10 KOs), 113.5, over ten. Though it was a highly expected encounter of the hard-hitting prospects, it resulted in a terribly disappointing affair as they scarcely mixed it up but only tried to feel out the opponent without throwing punches.
Promoter: Green Tsuda Promotions.
