Dalton Smith Drops Mathieu German Three Times, Retains WBC Silver Title

PhilBoxing.com

Local favorite Dalton Smith put on a commanding performance in front of his hometown crowd at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, England Saturday night (early Sunday in Manila), retaining his WBC Silver super lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Canada's Mathieu Germain. The three judges scored the contest 117-107, 119-105, and 119-105, reflecting Smith's dominance throughout the 12-round affair.

Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) showcased his superior power and skill, dropping the game Germain (26-3-1, 11 KOs) three times – once at the end of the second round with a powerful left hook, again in the eleventh with a right hand, and finally in the twelfth. Despite the knockdowns, Germain, fighting outside of Canada for the first time in his professional career, displayed tremendous heart and resilience, making it to the final bell. Smith had a point deducted in the final round for a low blow.

After the fight, Smith expressed his desire for a world title shot, stating, "All I want to say is I want that world title next." Promoter Eddie Hearn echoed this sentiment, suggesting Smith's next fight would indeed be for the WBC super lightweight championship currently held by Alberto Puello.

In the co-main event, former IBF featherweight champion **Josh Warrington** (32-4-1, 8 KOs) made a successful return to the ring after a period of inactivity, securing a unanimous decision victory over India's **Asad Asif Khan** (19-7-1, 5 KOs). The judges scored the super featherweight contest 99-89, 99-90, and 97-91 in favor of the "Leeds Warrior." Warrington knocked Khan down in the second round, and Khan also had a point deducted in the same round for repeatedly spitting out his mouthpiece.

The undercard also featured several notable results:

Josh Padley (16-1, 5 KOs) impressed with a fifth-round TKO victory over Marko Cvetanovic (13-1, 6 KOs) to claim the WBA International lightweight title. Padley dropped Cvetanovic with a barrage of punches, and the referee called a halt to the contest at 1:13 of the round.

Caoimhin Agyarko (14-0, 7 KOs) secured a majority decision win over Ryan Kelly (17-4, 8 KOs) in their middleweight bout with scores of 95-95, 97-94, and 96-94.

Giorgio Visioli (7-0, 6 KOs) continued his knockout streak with a fourth-round TKO victory over Kane Baker (19-12-2, 1 KO) in their super featherweight contest.

Emmanuel Buttigieg (8-0, 2 KOs) stopped Grant Dennis (19-11, 3 KOs) in the fifth round of their middleweight fight.

Joe Howarth (12-1, 4 KOs) earned a 60-54 points decision over Mario Valenzuela Portillo (8-7-2, 2 KOs) in their lightweight matchup.
