Marvin Mabait suffers TKO loss in Mexico

Mabait.
Marvin Mabait (19-2-2, 13 KOs) failed to defend his WBO Inter-Continental bantamweight strap against underdog Alejandro Hernandez (27-10-2, 15 KOs) of Mexico City, losing by TKO in the 5th round of their scheduled 12 round fight.
Mabait, 26, originally of Zamboanga City, figured in a heated exchange with the hometown fighter in the early moments of Round Number 5 and paid for it dearly after receiving multiple hooks in the head from Hernandez.
Hernandez, 27, was moving well and timing his shots against Mabait who was having a hard time finding the Mexican in rounds 3 and 4 after a competitive fight in the first two rounds. The upset-minded local fighter then caught an open Mabait with hooks that sent the Filipino fighter clinging to the ropes to avoid hitting the canvas.
Mabait was dazed after absorbing his opponent?s shots and struggled to maintain his balance as Hernandez poured multiple punches on his stunned opponent.
A series of unanswered punches by Hernandez and seeing that Mabait was in no position to defend himself forced the referee to halt the fight in favor of the hometown fighter at the 23 second mark of the round.
This was Mabait?s second fight in Mexico and the first defense of his regional title that he won in that country last year. Mabait, who trains at the Fortune Gym of Manny Pacquiao?s conditioning coach Justin Fortune in Los Angeles, is looking at a shot at a world title at bantamweight but he and his handlers will now have to regroup after suffering the devastating defeat.
Mabait?s co-manager, Gerry Penalosa expressed sadness after learning of the news and expressed hopes that his fighter will bounce back in his future fights. The Zamboanga City fighter who now resides in Los Angeles is also co-managed by Vinny Scolpino alongside Penalosa and is promoted by Felix ?Tutu? Zabala?s All Star Boxing Promotions.
The fight was carried live via Telemundo in Mexico and the Continental United States Friday night.
