Fernando Lumacad fell short against Hernan "Tyson" Marquez in Mexico By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 15 Jul 2012 Fernando Lumacad's quest for a future title was derailed Saturday night in Mexico against former flyweight champion, Hernan "Tyson" Marquez. The twenty six year old boxer from General Santos City figured in a close battle against the former WBA flyweight title holder in Marquez but came up short in the country of his counterpart in the ring. Marquez was the more active fighter, particularly in the early rounds of the fight, initiating the action against the defensive Filipino. The Mexican targeted Lumacad's body early with some of it resulting in punches below or near the belt line. Referee Dr. Alvaro Garcia warned Marquez to keep his punches high as early as the initial round. Marquez connected with a nice right hook in Round two and was able to force Lumacad in a corner in that round. The Mexican connected with combinations on Lumacad who defended well for the most part of the attack. Lumacad started to work harder in the 4th, jabbing successfully to keep his foe away from him. He then caught Marquez with a good combination to end the round. The taller Lumacad jabbed Marquez which kept his Mexican opponent at bay, this frustrated Marquez who was raring to engage with the Filipino. Lumacad also blocked most of his Mexican counterpart's shots in the 5th when Marquez pinned him in the ropes during that round. Lumacad also managed to land a good left within that round. The defensive minded Filipino was able to get out of a tight spot numerous times in the 6th and 7th after Marquez was able to catch on him, his head was well covered as the Mexican attempted to land against it. Lumacad would then sneak in some good combinations against Marquez who is getting frustrated that the Filipino is not engaging him in a brawl. Marquez landed a well placed uppercut in the 9th but Lumacad took that shot well. The General Santos native then continued to land some combinations on Marquez which did not seem to bother the Mexican either. The 10th and final round was by far the most exciting round of the bout as both fighters had some good spots to shine in this round. Lumacad landed good left and rights on Marquez in the early part of the 10th but Marquez caught his Filipino counterpart with a hard left in the last minute of the fight. That moved Lumacad backwards as Marquez chased after him. Marquez attacked him but Lumacad covered up and held on to the Mexican to avoid getting hit even more until the bell sounded to end the round and the fight. Marquez earned his 34th career win against 2 loses with a close Majority Decision victory against a good defensive super flyweight in Lumacad. One judge has the fight even with a score of 95-95 while one judge has him winning by only two points at 96-94 and a third judge had him ahead by only three points with a score of 97-94. The win brings Marquez closer to another title shot in another division as the fight was a title eliminator for the WBA Super Flyweight crown which is currently held by Thailander Tepparith Kokietgym. Meanwhile, Lumacad will have to venture back to the Philippines with the fourth defeat in his record against twenty six wins, but knowing that he put in a good defensive and tactical fight against a former champion.
