RODEL IS READY!

PhilBoxing.com

Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol is a day and half a pound away from his important bout against former flyweight champ, Julio Cesar Miranda of Mexico. Mayol, a former world champion himself is now in the tail end of his training in Manila. "Okay na, kuha na ang condition." (It's okay now, I am well conditioned.) said Mayol when I spoke to him over the phone Thursday evening.

Mayol said that he is also on track to make weight for his 10 round bout against Miranda. "I weighed myself yesterday, I am 115.5 (lbs) now." he stated. The 10 round flyweight bout is contracted not to exceed the 115 pound limit.

Mayol spend most of his time training for this fight in Baguio City with promoter and WBO welterweight champ, Manny Pacquiao. He went there after his fight with Hernan Marquez last March did not materialize because of alleged tampering in the scales by Marquez' camp during the weigh-in. He was hoping to have another crack at Marquez, who holds the WBA flyweight title but Marquez opted to fight another opponent in June. He was also promised to fight under Pacquiao's fight with Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas by his promotional company but the opportunity to fight Miranda came up and he grabbed it.

Mayol has been training under veteran trainers, Juanito Ablaca and Carl Penalosa. Ablaca trains fighters in the ALA Stable of Cebu and used to train Filipino boxing great Gerry Penalosa. Carl Penalosa meanwhile used to man the corner of Mayol's fellow Mandaue City fighter and hot prospect, Mercito Gesta who is now based in San Diego, California. His former trainer , Nonoy Neri has to attend to Pacquiao for his uocoming fight on June 9th and Ablaca and Penalosa was handpicked by Neri and Pacquiao themselves to train Mayol for this fight. " Trainers ko rin sila dati kaya maganda yung mga nasa corner ko at magagaling." (I used to train under them and they are very good trainers.) he said.

Mayol stated that he was not disappointed in not getting the Marquez fight because he sees this fight as a preparation to fight him in the future. "Parang pagsubok ko din ito, si Miranda kasi, hindi rin ito basta-basta." (This is like a test for me, because Miranda is not a push-over.) he said.

The native of Mandaue City states that Miranda will definitely be a tough fight for him, citing the Mexican's experience in the ring and Miranda being a former world champion. "Malakas ito at magaling na boksingero kaya para sa akin malaking pagsubok ito." (He is a strong and good boxer, he will be a big test for me.) Mayol explained. " Kaya kung sakali kami na ni Marquez ang lalaban, ay subok na ako." ( And if me and Marquez fights after this, I already have been tested with someone of Miranda's caliber.) he added.

He also implied that because he has been training for the Marquez fight since the beginning of the year that he has been well conditioned and ready for any fight. " Handang handa ako at maganda iyong kondisyon na ipinakita ko sa Baguio. Kasi dahil doon sa kay Marquez, walang tigil iyong ensayo namin at dire-diretso." (I am really ready and I showed that I'm in great condition while I was in Baguio. Because of the Marquez fight, my training has been continuous.)

It was because of this, that prompted MP Promotions to allow him to fight Miranda when the offer was made to them. "Nakita nila na handang -handa ako kaya pinalaban nila ako dito." ( They saw that I am really prepared that's why they fielded me for this bout.) Mayol said.

Manny Pacquiao, who owns the promotional outfit that handles Mayol was very supportive of him during his training and his upcoming fight . " Sabi niya; Galingan mo, Good luck at buo ang suporta niya sa akin." ( He said; Give it your best, Good luck and that he fully supports me.)
This bout has world title implications according to Mayol. " Parang elimination ito, kung sino ang manalo dito ay lalaban talaga ng world title fight." ( This is like an elimination bout, whoever wins here will figure in a world title fight.) he explained.

Mayol is excited that he is fighting in the Philippines again and be part of this great card. "Talagang excited ako at ganado na dito muli ako lalaban." ( I am really excited to be able to fight here again.) expressed Mayol. "Sana suportahan nila ako atsaka pray lang para walang mangyaring masama sa mga boksingero." (I hope they show me support and that they pray that nothing unfortunate will happen to the boxers during our fights.) he added.

Rodel Mayol enjoys the support of his boss, friend and boxing's best in Pacquiao. But most importantly, Mayol hopes that his countrymen will show him support in this important bout in his native country. He promised to represent them well as he do battle against a tough opponent in the ring this Saturday night.
