Marvin Quintero stops Al Sabaupan in 9 rounds By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Apr 2012 Morelia, Mexico - Filipino Al Sabaupan?s ( 18-0-1 )gallant effort in Mexico ended in disappointment after suffering a 9th round TKO defeat in the hands of his Mexican foe, Marvin Quintero ( 24-3 ). Sabaupan was aggressive and game as he pressed the action against the hometown favorite but the Mexican countered Sabaupan with crisp combinations that halted his advances. It was an exciting fight between the two lightweights as both fighters started trading hard shots in the early rounds. Quintero though, landed more and landed accurately on Sabaupan. Sabaupan who has a striking resemblance to Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has no answer against his counterpart?s accurate and volume punching. He would crack Quintero with occasional hooks to the head but Quintero would counter with shots of his own. Quintero?s stiff jabs also prevented Sabaupan in continuing his advances on his foe. He would mix uppercuts and hard hooks to the head and face of Sabaupan stopping him dead on his track. The previously unbeaten resident of Agoncillo, Batangas started the 8th round aggressively but it would be the same story as the previous rounds with Quintero picking him apart with scoring punches. That would frustrate the game Filipino fighter who even challenged Quintero to exchange more by opening his arms wide in the hopes of getting Quintero to bite it. But Quintero would not fall for it and instead continued his masterful dominance of Sabaupan. The Mexican would then up his ante in the 9th with piercing combos and headshots that would make Sabaupan retreat to the ropes. Referee Robert Byrd halted the fight after witnessing Sabaupan getting pounded mercilessly and was unable to defend himself for most of the onslaught. The win will bring Marvin Quintero one step closer to the IBF lightweight belt held by fellow countryman, Miguel Vasquez. Meanwhile, Sabaupan will have the first loss of his career in his first fight out of the Philippines. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rich Mazon . |
