TEAM MAYOL FELT CHEATED ON THE WEIGH-IN, FIGHT OFF

PhilBoxing.com

Rodel Mayol.
Today's fight between Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol and WBA flyweight champ Tyson Marquez is off. That is according to Rodel Mayol himself after this author got a hold of him on the phone in Sonora, Mexico where the fight is to be held tonight.

Mayol feels that Marquez and his team cheated their way in yesterday's weigh in after Marquez tried numerous attempts to achieve the contracted weight of 112 pounds. Marquez came in at 52 kg or 114.4 pounds on his first attempt on the scales and Mayol's trainer already noticed how Marquez tried to maneuver the scales in his favor. "Intensyon talaga nila na mandaya sila." (It was their intention to cheat.) said Neri. "Sa first attempt nila, hinawakan yung sa baba ng timbangan, pinu-push. (They were touching the scales and was pushing it on their first attempt at the scales.) he described. Neri said the WBA commissioner saw it as well and warned Marquez " Don't do that."

Marquez was then given another chance to step on the scales and not only was he over the 112 limit again but he committed the previous act of manipulating the scales. "Pangalawang attempt sa timbangan, Iyon pa rin ang ginawa." (He did the same thing on his second attempt.) Neri believes that Marquez is really overweight and has no choice but to cheat on the scales. "Wala na kasi silang choice kung hindi mandaya." (They have no choice but to cheat.) opined Neri. The WBA commissioner witnessed it as well and Neri objected to the proceedings. He then asked the WBA commissioner to disqualify Marquez because of what they both witness but the official did not heed his objections. "Dapat disqualified na. Hindi fair yung commissioner ng WBA. Binigyan pa rin ng isang pagkakataon for the third time na titimbangin pa rin at over pa rin." (He should have been disqualified. The WBA commissioner wasn't fair. They gave Marquez another chance for the third time and he was overweight again.) said Neri. Neri believes Marquez should have been disqualified then when he attempted those illegal tactics.

Commotion then ensued as Marquez and his team attempted to make it to another try much to Neri's disapproval. "Parang nagkagulo na at parang nag panic na rin ako kasi di talaga ako papayag ng ganun. Tatakutin ka na eh. (There was a commotion and I panicked then because I will not agree to it. They were trying to bully us.) Neri narrated over the phone.

Marquez was given a fourth chance to weigh himself again much to Neri and Mayol's dismay. Marquez was surrounded by a large number of his team to try to hide the proceedings from them but Neri was able to squeeze inside. It is then that he noticed how Marquez pulled out another cheating tactic. "Iyong paa ni Marquez pag timbang, dapat pantay iyon. Inangat pa yung isa at hindi nakapantay. Iyong isa nakabitin, iyong isa nakaflat." (Marquez's feet should have been well placed and are of the same level. But they wer not. He lifted the other foot while the other one was hanging on the end of the scales as he was being weighed.) described Neri.

Mayol's coach objected to the WBA official right there and he asked him to look at it but the WBA said "Okay." as Marquez finally made weight. Marquez then got off the scales and immediately drank water, thereby ruling out another weigh-in which Neri insists.

Rodel Mayol, Nonoy Neri and their team were dismayed on the outcome of yesterday's weigh in. They have a long discussion and have decided not to fight tomorrow night. "Pinag-usapan namin ni Rodel na hindi kami lalaban, para naman maisip nila at me leksyon din." (Me and Rodel decided not to pursue the fight,so they can think about things and to give them a lesson as well.) narrated Neri." Naghirap din kami mag-reduce para kunin yung timbang tapos iyon lang mangyayari, lolokohin lang kami." Ilan pa kayang mga boksingero ang lolokohin ng mga Mexicano, hindi lang Pilipino kundi iyong iba pang mga dayo dito.(We had a hard time ourselves in making weight but we sacrificed and achieved it and this is what happens, they fooled us. . How many more boxers will the Mexicans make a fool of, not only against Filipinos but to the others who come here to fight.)

Mayol was a voice of frustration when I spoke to him last night. But he wants to prove a point by not going to fight tomorrow. "Talagang handang handa akong makipaglaban ngunit napagdesisyunan na ng lahat na unfair sa ibang boxer din kung mangyari din naman sa iba kaya dapag bigyan naming ng leksiyon na talagang pag dinaya ka, di dapat palagpasin." declared Mayol. Me rules ang boxing , di naman pwede na gaganyanin tayo palagi. Hindi pwede iyan. " ( I was ready to fight but we have decided not to because it is unfair to other boxers if something like this happens to them. We need to set an example. It is not right to just let it pass. That is not right.) he firmly added.

Mayol also reiterated that it is unfair for him and on his team because they trained so hard for this fight. "Nagsakripisyo din ako. One week din akong hindi kumakain para makuha ang timbang tapos ganito. " (I sacrificed as well. I did not eat for one week to make the weight and this is what they do.) he told me frustratingly. I asked him if matters about payment has been discussed between them and Marquez's promoter. He brushed it aside and said "Bahala na sila kung hindi nila ako bayaran," (It's up to them if they do not pay us.)

Coach Neri seconded his pupil's intentions as well. "Baka akala nila siguro pera lang habol namin. Pangit naman iyong ganun. Pagka lalaban tayo at kapag me mangyari ay magsisihan. Mas mabuti na iyong desiyunan namin kung ano na ang dapat. ( They probably think we are all about the money. That's not right. If we fought and something happened, there will be a lot of finger pointing. It is better that we make a stand and a decision now.) " Lalaban namin kami ng parehas, nasa kondisyon naman iyong bata. Basta wala lang lokohan. " ( We are ready to fight fairly. The kid is in great condition. As long as they don't make a fool out of us.) he explained.

Team Mayol is scheduled to fly back to Los Angeles on Sunday but verbalized that they will fly back to the States as early as tomorrow if nothing materializes.

Rodel Mayol's big fight is supposed to happen tonight in Mexico but it seems that the fight has already begun for him and his team. This one, is not only against his opponent's rampant attempts to cheat his way to the fight but it is also about him making a stand on what has been an injustice in the sport.
