ST. PATTY?S BRAWL: COMPLETE UNDERCARD RESULTS FOR MARTINEZ - MACKLIN IN NEW YORK.

PhilBoxing.com

Monaghan and Watkins in action.
New York - In the background that is the celebration of Irish - American culture and the feast day of St. Patrick?s Day, the Theatre at Madison Square Garden is the site of tonight?s boxing event that features middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez and Matthew Macklin. The following are the results of the undercards here in The Big Apple.

Heavyweight Thomas Hardwick 4-0 (2KOs) of Yonkers, NY opened the night for the home team with a 4 round UD victory over TJ Gibson 1-1 of Duluth, MN. Hardwick dropped Gibson twice en route to identical scores of 39-35 on all of the three judges score cards.

Favored Danny McDermott 9-3-2 (4 KOs) of nearby Jersey City, NJ lost a tough Majority Decision against Carl McNickles 7-3 (6 KOs) of Chicago, IL. McNickles was dropped in the 2nd round but was able to survive the round and ended racking up points in majority of the succeeding rounds to carve out a win in the 6 round Junior Welterweight battle. The scores were an even score of 56 and two similar cards of 57 - 55 on the other two judges.

The son of legendary trainer Kevin Rooney Sr., Kevin Jr. 3-1 (1 KOs) of Catskills, NY made a short night of Anthony Shuff 0-1 of Reidsville, NC. Rooney Jr., who was cheered on by a handful of his local fans terminated the unwilling Shuff in the 1:27 mark of the opening round on the way to an easy victory.

New Yorker Charlie Bellamy / Ota 19-1-1 (13 KOs) who now resides and trains out of Tokyo, Japan stopped Gundrick King 16-7 (11 KOs) of Tuscaloosa, AL. in the 7th round of their scheduled 8 round Junior Middleweight match. He dropped Gundrick in the 6th after a couple of see-saw rounds between the two fighters. The former Harlem native then finished the job in the next round, needing only 37 seconds to end his opponent?s night. Ota improved his record to 20 wins against a single loss with 14 of his fights by stoppage.

The predominantly green wearing Irish crowd went crazy when local favorite ?Irish? Seanie Monaghan 12-0 (8 KOs) of Long Beach, NY stepped in the ring to fight Eric Watkins 6-1 (2 KOs) of Morgantown, WV in a scheduled 6 round Light Heavyweight match. The hard punching Monaghan drilled Watkins with solid right hands and uppercuts during the fight. But the tough Watkins withstood those shots, never tasting the canvass despite those hits. The scores were a lopsided one of 59-55 twice and 60-54 in favor of the local fighter. Monaghan celebrated his 13th straight win against zero loss with his fellow New Yorkers and fellow Irishmen here at the famed arena.

In a battle of unbeaten heavyweights Russian Magomed Abdusalamov 13-0 (13 KOs) who now trains out of Oxnard, California and under Sergio Martinez?s trainer Pablo Sarmiento rocked fellow undefeated fighter Jason Pettaway 11-0 (8 KOs) of Huntington, WV early in the fight and sustained his attack en route to an impressive 4th round TKO of his foe. The heavy hitting Russian bloodied Pettaway as early as the 2nd round with crushing right hooks followed by an equally impressive left hook that the American has no answer for. Abdusalamov knocked down Pettaway in the 4th after crisp combinations to the head. Pettaway rose at the count of 8 only to be in the receiving end of another hed whacking by the Russian who is nicknamed ?Mago.? Referee Dave Fields halted the fight at the 1:20 mark of the 4th on the advise of the ring physicians after that series of shots. Abdusalamov won the vacant WBC United States Silver belt with the win and improved his perfect record to 14 wins with the same number of knockouts.

In the co-feature of tonight?s main event and the first match shown on HBO, Edwin Rodriguez 20-0 (14 KOs) of Worcester, MA battled Donovan George 22-1-1 (19 KOs) of Chicago, IL in a bruising Super Middleweight battle in front of close to 5000 appreciative fans. Rodriguez used stiff jabs to thwart the pressing George and followed that up with straight right hands that found its way on his opponent?s head. George would not be under punched himself as he landed looping right hands of his own on his unbeaten foe. They trade shots in the 4th and the 5th which the sell out crowd at the arena acknowledged. They went at it again in the 10th engaging in a punishing final round that drew favorable reaction from the crowd here in New York. Rodriguez? accurate punching earned him a hard earned Unanimous Decision victory with scores of 96-94, 99-91 and 97-93 in the 10 round match making him the USBA Super Middleweight champion in the process.
