MAIN EVENTS PUTS ON A SHOW IN PHILLY AND IN NETWORK TV By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Jan 2012 Philadelphia, PA. - In it's first installment on the new NBC Sports Network (Former Versus channel) , New Jersey based Main Events promotions puts up a spectacular show in the City of Brotherly Love. The boxing event featured mostly homegrown fighters who gave their best to put on a show in front of a sell out hometown crowd at The Asylum Arena, south of this city. The main bout of the night was not only a battle of undefeated heavyweights but also a battle of Philadelphia's best big man in Bryant Jennings 11-0 (5 KO's) against fellow Philadelphia native Maurice Byarm 13-0-1 (9 KO's) who now trains in Washington, DC. Jennings, the lighter heavyweight at 220 pounds used his speed and mobility against a pressing Byarm. Jennings used combinations that connected on the 240 pound plus Byarm that forced him in the corner and the ropes numerous times in the fight. Byarm stepped up the action in the middle rounds of the fight egged by his corner and his mother who was yelling instructions at ringside. " Go to the body Maurice" shouted Byarm's mother, which the 29 year old heavyweight followed. He landed hard body shots on Jennings who was tiring at this point. The combination of fatigue and Byarm's body work made Jennings less productive in the said rounds. Jennings woke up on the last two rounds of the scheduled 10 rounder with impressive hooks that connected on his opponent's head. Byarm was once again forced to sit on the ropes as Jennings unleashed a flurry of punches that electrified the crowd. That was enough for Jennings to win the fight in all of the three judges at ringside. The scores were 97-93 and 96-94 twice for the North Philadelphia native. Another bout of unbeaten fighters preempted the main event, this time in the Light Heavyweight division. Sullivan Barrera 8-0 ( 6 KO's) formerly of Cuba but now trains and resides in Miami, FL. saw action against Damar Singleton 7-0 (3 KO's) of Toledo, OH. Barrera who is accompanied by fellow Cuban standout, featherweight superstar Yuriorkis Gamboa out punched and out pointed Singleton to grab the 9th straight win of his career. Barrera was the faster , more nimble of the two as evidenced by his speedy combos and movement in the ring. His jabs and right straights scored on Singleton on most of the rounds earning him a UD win with scores of 59-55 and shutout scores of 60-54 twice. The first televised fight of the night featuring Gabriel Rosado 18-5 (10 KO's) of North Philadelphia versus Jesus Soto- Karass 24-6-3 (16 KO's) of Los Mochis, Mexico could have well been the main event of the night because of it's rugged action in the ring. Rosado puts on a show in front of his hometown fans with a spectacular knock out of the tough Soto-Karass. He used his speed against the pressing Mexican , stunning him a couple of times with vicious right hooks. Those hooks provided early damage on Soto-Karass as he suffered a cut in his left eyebrow in only the third round of the fight. Rosado targeted that wound with more right hooks forcing Soto- Karass in the ropes in the 4th. A flurry of left and right hooks connected for Rosado which was appreciated by the crowd. The end came for Soto- Karass in the 2:06 mark of the 5th round when he was forced into a corner after receiving hacking headshots from Rosado. A brutal right and left hook to Soto- Karass' head in that corner was all referee Steve Smoger needed to see to step in and stop the fight. It was the only stoppage of the night, one that brought the crowd to its feet in this arena. The following are the rest of the results of the other fights here in Philadelphia. Naim Nelson 3-0 of Philadelphia defeated the debuting Pedro Andres of Bridgeton, NJ via a 4 round unanimous decision victory in the opener. Jose Peralta Alejo 6-1 (4 KO's) of Jersey City, NJ prevailed upon Lenwood Dozier 7-3-1 (3 KO's) of Glen Burnie, MD via another unanimous decision victory. Alejo scored a shutout score of 60-54 on all scorecards of the three judges at ringside. Another Philly fighter in Ray Robinson 12-2 (% KO's) won last night against fellow welterweight Doel Carrasquillo 16-18-1 (14 KO's) of Lancaster, PA. Robinson won a hard match against a come forward fighter in Carrasquillo. He used his legs and lateral movement to evade from Carrasquillos' punches, most especially the left hook that scored once in a while for Carrasquillo. The slicker and savvier Robinson jabbed and out punched Carrasquillo en route to a hard earned 10 round UD win. His scores were 79-73 and 78-74 times two. Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events promotion expressed delight on the show her company put on tonight in collaboration with fellow promoters J. Russell Peltz and Greg Cohen. "In general, considering the disaster we were looking at a week ago, I am ecstatic." said Duva. Her original main event featuring heavyweights Eddie Chambers and Sergei Liakhovich had to be replaced less than two weeks before tonight's big event because of injury to Chambers. And with no viable opponent for Liakhovich, Duva and Peltz scrambled to make a fight in less than a week that will be entertaining for TV viewing. They gambled on the two young heavyweights in Byarm and Jennings, a gamble that paid off for them. "It was a gamble. We gambled big but I think we won. Everybody complains about the heavyweight division and says it's boring, that was not boring. That was exciting as hell." Duva told me after the fights. "That's two guys on five days notice. Imagine, what will be it be like if people were actually anticipating for this particular fight as they may be five years from now." she added excitedly. Main Events and NBC Sports Network will again team up in March 24th with Zab Judah headlining the show against undefeated Vernon Paris in Brooklyn, New York. " It's going to be terrific, I am really excited about it." Duva declared. Photo: Jennings and Byarm see action in the main event.
