Happy Birthday Toshiaki Nishioka & Ricardo Lopez! PhilBoxing.com Wed, 27 Jul 2011  Ricardo ?Finito? Lopez who turned 45 was undefeated throughout his career ending with a record of 51-0-1 with 38 knockouts. He won the WBC minimum weight title with a 5th round TKO over Japan?s Hideyuki Ohashi on October 25, 1990. He successfully defended his title against four Filipino challengers. He scored a shutout twelve round decision over Pretty Boy Lucas on March 16, 1992 and then won by an 11th round knockout over Manny Melchor on December 18, 1993. Lopez scored a 12th round TKO over Andy Tabanas on April 1, 1995 and knocked out Edito ?Ala? Villamor in the eighth round at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 16, 1996. Villamor is now the head trainer at the famed ALA Gym in Cebu owned by respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer. In his farewell title defense Lopez scored an 8th round knockout over South Africa?s Zolani Petelo at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lopez was succeeded by Filipino Eric Jamili who won the vacant WBO minimum weight title with an 8th round TKO of Mickey Cantwell in London on December 19, 1997. Jamili reigned as champion until May 30, 1998 when he lost the title in his first defense by a 5th round TKO against Kermin Guardia on May 30, 1998. ?Finito? Lopez was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame on the first year of eligibility in 2007. Reigning WBC super bantamweight champion Yoshiaki Nishioka turned 35. He is a Japanese southpaw with a record of 38-4-3 with 24 knockouts. Nishioka won the 122 pound title with a 12th round TKO over Genaro Garcia on January 3, 2009. He faced Filipino challenger Balweg Bangoyan in a title defense on April 30 last year and won by a 5th round TKO in a mismatch. Meantime, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told Viva Sports that he was putting together a fight card on October 3 between WBO super bantamweight champion Jorge ?Travieso? Arce and Nishioka and that ?both guys will sign for the winner to fight Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire for the WNC 122 pound title.?  |
