Mike Jones : ?Pacman is a warrior. I am a warrior. That will be a dream-come-true fight for me.? By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 26 Jun 2011 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Mike Jones did not make his hometown fans wait long on a night delayed by power outages in this south Philadelphia arena called The Asylum as he made short work of Raul Munoz with a spectacular 2nd round TKO win. The fight that was broadcasted on Top Rank and Fox Sports Network?s offering of its boxing series Top Rank Live. Jones ( 24-8, 18 KO?s ) started tentatively but picked up the action in the following round as he hurt Munoz ( 22-13, 16 KO?s ) with a couple of body shots then a devastating right hook to the head dropped the fighter from Topeka, Kansas instantly. The referee stopped the fight after seeing Munoz struggled to get back to his feet after the knockdown. The official time was 2:29 of round 2. The win improved Jones?s unbeaten record to 25 and 19 KO?s. The win puts his name on notice to more lucrative and big fights in the future, most specifically a fight with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao. Jones?s name was mentioned by Top Rank head Bob Arum last week as a possible opponent of Pacquiao in as early as next year. Both Pacquiao and Jones are promoted by Arum and a fight between the two is highly possible given this tie. That announcement was an underlying theme both for last night?s event and the fighter from this city. ?Pacman,? was his immediate response to Steve Farhood?s question of which one welterweight would he pick to fight in the post fight interview. One that drew big cheers from the crowd. ?Pacman is not gonna hide in there, Pacman is a warrior. I am a warrior. We would come to bring the fight.? was his answer on why he would be successful than others against Pacquiao. ?That will be a dream-come-true fight for me.? he added. Jones knows that he needs to stay busy and come out with wins like last night?s to further his cause before that big fight with Pacquiao.? I believe its gonna be a big year. I?m gonna finish the rest of the year strong.? he said. He is rated as the number 1 contender to Pacquiao?s belt by the WBO besides holding the NABA, WBO-NABO and WBC Continental of Americas welterweight titles. A major belt and victories over named opponents would also serve him well in that dream fight of his. One that he clearly is intent on doing in order to share the ring with the fighter everyone wants to fight in Manny Pacquiao. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rich Mazon . |
