WCP Superbrawl Co-Main Event - Lindsay Garbatt WIBA Champion One on One Interview

PhilBoxing.com

The WCP recently held a press conference in Whitby, ON to promote the Ladies WIBA title fight which is one of the co-main event for “Super Brawl” to be held at this Friday, February 4th at the Molson Center in Barrie, Ontario.

This presser was an opportunity to showcase the local boxer from Oshawa, Ontario who is the current WIBA Super featherweight title-holder. “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt (6-3-1, 3KO’s) spoke proudly of her coming title defense against Jelena Mrdjenovich (24-6-112KO‘s).

The friendly pugilists spoke to the fans and press in attendance inside the ‘Wild Wing’ franchise with promoter Rick Smiciklas and Trainer Don Nelson nearby. Accolades were given to Garbatt’s training partners which includes Lisa “Bad News” Brown who previously fought Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton last year. Her trainers and partners involved helped her get to this point heading into Superbrawl.

“Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt stated that the outcome would be no different from the last encounter with Jelena Mrdjenovich heading into this re-match. The outcome was a split decision in Garbatt’s favor over hometown favorite Mrdjenovich. Their first encounter took place in Edmonton, Alberta last November.

Socrates Celestial: When did you start Boxing?
Lindsay Garbatt: I turned pro 3.5 years ago, boxing for the last 7 years.

SC: What was your initial club?
LG: Motor City Boxing and presently still is with my trainer Don Nelson.

SC: You’re last fight with Jelena Mrdjenovich was an important fight. You were virtually unknown fighting a media sensation and accomplished fighter. It was her hometown and she was the favorite.
LG: Yes, definitely. She fights there (Edmonton) all the time and I was coming off of two hard fights with Melissa Hernandez. I was ready for her.

SC: What difference is there now from your last fight to this fight? You winning in her hometown establish that you had a clean win. What do you think will happen this time around?
LG: I hope that I don’t leave it in the judge’s hands. I hope that there won’t be a split decision. The main thing is I want to put on a good show for the fans. I want another hard fight because it was an excellent fight to watch. It looks like it will be a rare occurrence that I will be fighting at home so I want to take advantage of this opportunity and put on a good show.
SC: So what do you think of her reach? She does stand taller than you, did you find that it presented a problem and have you adjusted to her long limbs?
LG: She did surprise me during the fight. She has a really long jab and she hit me a lot with it. I took that home with me and we’ve been working on a game plan.

SC: What did you do to convince the judges that you deserved the win?
LG: Just my pressure. That’s me. I’m always going to be pushing forward, throwing punches. That’s what I felt convinced the judges.

SC: Is there a rematch clause should Mrdjenovich win?
LG: There is not one in the contract, but we’re not thinking that we’ll lose.

SC: We know that fighters and coaches, like myself, don’t like to look past our next fight. However, in the past exists a loss for you with Jeannine Garside. Are there any plans of having a rematch and avenging that loss?
LG: I look forward to that fight in the future and I do want to have that fight. I’m sure it will happen again. I don’t think it’ll be in the near future, but what I do want is a trilogy with Hernandez. I want to go for other belts as well.

SC: Do you think you could move in weight divisions?
LG: I think I could either move up or down one division. I fought anywhere between 123 to 135 pounds. I’ll go where I have to and remain busy and make good fights.

SC: What do you think of the upcoming Manny Pacquiao versus Shane Mosley fight?
LG: I love Pacquiao! He is actually my favorite fighter, Yeah! Whoever he fights there’s no contest. There’s no one out there that can beat him.

SC: So how about Floyd Mayweather junior?
LG: I’m a Pacquiao fan! There’s no discussion. If you ask my training partners that are pro-Mayweather, they’ll all tell you I always say Pacquiao will beat Mayweather.

SC: How does Pacquiao win?
LG: Pressure, aggression, crazy angles. Mayweather is slick, but not enough to win. Pacquiao is a bombshell.

SC: Who is your favorite female boxer?
LG: Hernandez is my favorite boxer. Funny enough, she wished me luck on my fight. We make good fights. We got fight of the year this past year. We had two sick fights and I look forward to fighting her again. It’s a weird relationship because I respect her because she’s a good boxer and she respects me. We want woman’s boxing to be like that, we want to have good fights. It’s so far and in between so we have to do it.

SC: What do you plan to do when you finally hang up the gloves?
LG: I’ll always be doing something athletic so if it’s not boxing it will be something else athletic. I’ve been a jock all my life. I’m really involved with my club so I might help with coaching. I like talking to kids and help them stay motivated, stay out of trouble, be positive, have a good attitude and know everything you do in the ring and carry it over to real life situations.

SC: What would you like to say to your female fans considering taking up boxing?
LG: Even though you train in a team atmosphere, whatever you put in for yourself is what you’re going to get out for yourself. You can be on your own. It’s rewarding to train day in and out and fight towards something. Win or lose you grow from this experience. I’ve become a better person since becoming a boxer.

SC: What’s your prediction for this fight with Mrdjenovich?
LG: 7th round knockout.

SC: What would be your prediction if there was a rematch between Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton vs. Lisa “Bad News” Brown?
LG: I watched the fight, Julaton looked fantastic but Lisa still has a lot of fights ahead of her, Lisa is my training partner, she is very strong and I’ll back my girl who is my training partner, she is an inspiration to my fighting.

The winner of the WCP ladies co-main event WIBA title fight between “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt and Jelena Mrdjenovich will either show a consistent winner deserving of the title or the makings of a rubber match that would spark interest into the female super featherweight division.
