CANCUN WEIGH IN: DAPUDONG 111.1 LBS., UICAB 112 LBS.

PhilBoxing.com

Cancun, Mexico, Sept. 16 - As expected, the Philippines Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong tipped the scale way below the 112 lb. limit for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Flyweight Championship submitting a weight of 111.1 lbs. while challenger Wilbert "Hurricane" Uicab weighed exactly 112 lbs. during a public weigh-in supervised by the WBC and the Mexican boxing commission in the Palace Casino in downtown Cancun at about 1 p.m. today (2 a.m. Sept. 17 Manila time).

It did not come as a surprise to the boxing contingent from North Cotabato headed by former governor Manny Pinol, who is Dapudong's uncle and manager, and his brothers Patricio and Noli, because early on the Filipino champion showed indications that with the long and hard training that he underwent prior to the scheduled fight tomorrow, he will go down to his natural weight division which is junior flyweight or 108 lbs.

"We really expected that. But there is no problem. Edrin did not have a hard time getting to that weight level. He is used to fighting at 108 lbs.," said Noli who is the chief trainer of the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato owned by the Pinol brothers.

Uicab, on the other hand, who is shorter by about three inches than the 5' 5" tall Filipino champion, came in at exactly 112 lbs. Although shorter, the Mexican challenger appeared to be more muscular than the 24-year-old defending champion from M'lang, North Cotabato.

After the weigh-in, Dapudong feasted on steamed Mexican rice, tinolang isda and sliced beef stewed in red tomatos cooked by no less than the former governor himself.

Although Dapudong, in his usual humble and unassuming demeanor, has not made a public statement on his expected outcome of the fight, he climbs the ring at the Cancun Convention Center at 8 p.m. tomorrow a heavy favorite to retain his title.

Even Mexican boxing offcials concede that Dapudong, who is three inches taller than the Mexican challenger and has the advantage of a longer reach, would be a very difficult opponent for Uicab.

Dapudong (23 wins, 13 KOs, 2 losses) holds the distinction of being one of the very few Filipino boxers who has never been knocked down or suffered a cut in his entire boxing career. He is now ranked No. 3 Pound for Pound Best Boxer in the Philippines Manny Paquiao and Nonito Donaire.

The fight will be shown in 96 countries through ESPN.
