RP offered to host pair of int?l boxing meets

PhilBoxing.com

If plans do not misconstrue, the Philippines could well be the site of two international boxing competitions next year, including what could be the biggest sporting event ever the country will be hosting.

International Amateur Boxing Association president, Dr. Ching Ku Wu has offered Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines chair, businessman-sportsman Manny V. Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas to host either the World Women?s Boxing Championship or the Asian Men?s Championship, both scheduled next year under their AIBA calendar of events.

Wu made the offer during the opening ceremony of the First MVP International Friendship Boxing Cup where he, along with Asian Boxing Confederation president Chang Jiangping and executive secretary Richard Gouzheng were the special guests.
Vargas told the Manila Times all that is needed for the country to be awarded the right is a letter of intention from the ABAP, which he added he has already submitted.

?The offer, actually, is for us to host the World Women?s which, according to Dr. Wu stands to be attended by at least 100 of its more a hundred members,? Vargas,s PLDT executive vice president, said. ?If we get it, that would earn the distinction of being the biggest event we will be staging in the country.?

?But for me, I prefer the Asian Men?s kasi qualifying tournament yun for the 2012 London Olympic Games so that if we hold the tournament here, medyo lalakas ang tsansa na ating mga boksingero na ma-qualify, hindi ba?? Vargas reasoned out.
?Anyway, it?s up for the chairman (Pangilinan) and the ABAP board which tournament between the too are we going to host. Both tournaments are big in terms of magnitude and both will give the country big exposure in the international sporting scene,? he added.

Pangilinan, MVP to the business and sporting communities, for his part said he prefers any of the twin affairs or both, if possible.
?We can get so many mileage, of course, if we agree on holding the World Women?s here. We can expose our distaff fighters to the world-caliber competitions they will need if any or some of them qualify for the Olympics,? he said. ?Same with our men boxers.?

?In terms of exposure for the country that can bring insurmountable benefits as far as our tourism industry is concerned, mas maganda kung World Women?s nga ang dalhin natin dito,? Pangilinan, head honco of PLDT and Smart Telecommunications, said.
?I also favored the Asian Men?s precisely because of the advantage it would bring as far as our quest for the Philippines? first ever Olympic gold medal is concerned,? the owner of the Talk ?N Text team in the professional Philippine Basketball Association said.
He then added jestingly: ?Siguro tangapin na nating pareho para lahat ng benefit at advantage makuha natin.?
Pangilinan said though that should any of the two is or both are awarded to the Philippines preparations should start as soon as possible so as not to put the country in an embarrassing position.
