PCAP's QC Simba's Tribe woodpushers to compete in Marikina chess tourney By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Nov 2022 MANILA---The Invitational Chess Tournament in Honor of 94-year-old Tatay Domeng Santos, oldest player of Marikina Chess Community, will field PCAP's Quezon City Simba's Tribe cast of woodpushers that will be vying for chess supremacy on Nov. 6, Sunday at the Marikina Riverside Gazeebo. Quezon City Simba's Tribe woodpushers that will be seeing action in the five-round Swiss system competition is composed of Freddie Talaboc and Elizsa Gayle Cafirma. Also, Jian Carlo Rivera, April Joy Ramos, Raffy Lobitaña, Edwin Tendencia, Jayson Esparagoza, Joseph Gabriel, Cayanan and Ric Alvarado, well-known blitz contenders have also signed up for the tournament in Marikina. According to the organizer, Johnny "Joel" Gaudia of the Marikina Chess Federation, the event will feature Class A (Expert), Class B (Intermediate), Class C (Novice) and Under 14 (by Nov 2022, kids born on or after 2008), and will apply time control of 10 minutes plus 3 seconds increment per player. The competition starts at 9:00 a.m. No less than Asia’s first Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will do the traditional ceremonial moves along with Gaudia, Chief Arbiter FA Rudy Ibanez and Deputy Arbiter NA Ranier Pascual. This is a free registration tournament, free lunch and merienda sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), open to all untitled Marikina chess players and players from nearby localities. Limited to the first 120 registrants only. Top 3 winners of each categories will receive P1,000, P700 and P500 each. Trophies to the champions of each categories and Medals for other winners will also be awarded. For the U14, all cash prizes will be converted to gift checks.
