VARGAS-MAYORGA: THE HEAT IS ON! By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 01 Nov 2007 LOS ANGELES -- The much awaited Fernando Vargas-Ricardo Mayorga rumble in Los Angeles is finally on. The bout which was postponed and re-scheduled after Vargas reportedly suffered some kind of a blood problem in September is set to go on November 23, a day after Thanksgiving. Given the animosity between the two protagonists, the fans who reportedly purchased over a million dollars in tickets to see two time world champion Fernando ?El Feroz? Vargas (26-0, 22KO) battle Nicaragua?s three time world champion Ricardo ?El Matador? Mayorga (27-6-1, 22KO) at the Staples Center are in to see a old fashion street brawl. In fact, during a press conference in July, Vargas and Mayorga got into a scuffle after the latter disrespected Vargas? mother, wife and daughter. Mayorga ended with a cut under his eye courtesy of a Vargas bare knuckle punch. To this day, Mayorga continues to insult Vargas. He said: ?I am going to give Vargas the chance to cash his last paycheck. I said publicly that 'fatty' has always feared me. I conceded to take this fight at 162 lbs because fatty couldn?t lose any more weight. I told the press he is a fat ass like Mexican singer Paquita de del Barrio. I agreed to move the weight up to 166 lbs after the postponement so he can eat all the tacos and burritos with cheese and chili like Mexicans do, but only if he agrees to come and fight me toe to toe like a Mexican on Nov. 23.? The Vargas- Mayorga tiff is co-promoted by Don King of the Don King Promotions and Kathy Duva of Main Events in association with AEG and the Staples Center and VEP. It will be televised on PPV basis and will be distributed by SHOWTIME PPV. Fighting in the undercard to spice up the evening is IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron (28-2,26KO) of Redding, Pennsylvania who will be defending his crown for the second time. He will meet Jesse Feliciano (15-5-3,9K0) of Los Angeles. Also to see action in yet another title fight is former IBF 154 lb champ Roman ?Made in Hell? Karmazin (35-2-1,22KO) of St. Petersburg, Russia. He will be exchanging leathers with Alejandro ?Terra? Garcia (25-2, 24KO) of Tijuana, Mexico for the WBA Intercontinental super-welterweight belt.
