HARDMAN HILT TAKES THE HARD ROAD TO THE TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

JAMIE HILT'S STATE TITLE SHOT MEANS MORE THAN JUST THE BELT

JAMIE HILT GOES BY THE FIGHT NAME 'HARD MAN' AND IT'S VERY FITTING. He works hard, he trains hard and he fights hard. His hard edge can be triggered back to his upbringing in Thargomindah. As a youngster he was taught two very important values - respect and work ethic as well as the simple but very moral ethos of 'treat people how you want to be treated'.

The lure of chasing sport brought he and elder brother Shannon to Toowoomba for high school. Jamie and Shannon were both accomplished rugby league players. Jamie would win a TRL A grade premiership with Newtown and represent the Clydesdales and South West Mustangs.

When he hung up the boots he always had an itch that needed to be scratched. That itch was to step through the ropes and try his hand at boxing. As a youngster he had four amateur fights for two wins and two losses.

"I always wanted to fight," Hilt said.

"Dad was a good fighter, he fought in Thargomindah, Cunnamulla and Brisbane so boxing is in the family.

"I ran into Craig Monagle one day and he asked if I was interested in a corporate fight and it went from there."

He starred in two corporate bouts and went pro with a win over Junior Esi on June 27 2015.

Fast forward to today and Hilt has a record of six fights for four wins one draw and one loss and on October 22 he faces Aphichat Koedchatturat for the Queensland welterweight title.

"It's been a dream of mine to win a State title, I've only been in the sport a short time it would mean everything to me to get the belt.

"I've had a great preparation and this is the best I've ever felt."

The hard man has also had his share of hard times in life. None more so than in 2004 when his elder brother Shannon took his own life at twenty six years of age. Jamie carries his brothers name on a tattoo on his torso.

"It's the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with," Hilt said.

"He was my best mate.

"He always supported me, he always pushed me and he used to encourage me to get back into boxing.

"When I'm in the ring and need to dig deep I think of him.

"Shannon's legacy means everything to me, I wouldn't be the person I am without his influence."

Jamie Hilt is a busy man, everyday before he even thinks about boxing he works 10 hour days in his business J&K Hilt Concreting.

"Life is very busy, but these are the sacrifices you have to make if you want to be a fighter," Hilt said.

"Often I'll start work before sunrise finish after sunrise, change clothes quickly and head to training."

However their is a soft side to the hard man. He's a devoted family man. With wife Kylie they have four children, Brodie 9, Keelie 7, Marlie 5 and Maddie 1.

"They're my motivation," Hilt said.

"My wife Kylie is amazing and she makes so many sacrifices so I can chase my dreams.

"I couldn't do what I do without her, not only is she a great mother, a great wife but she also does the books for our business.

"Whether I'm a champion in the ring or not, Kylie will always be the champion of our family.

"To have my family ringside supporting me is the best feeling in the World.

"My son Brodie is taking a liking to boxing now as well and he also plays rugby league.

"My family is my everything."

Hilt is also full of praise for his 'boxing family.'

"I couldn't do what I do without my trainer Craig Monagle, his support and commitment to me is unquestioned.

"From where I started to where I am now - Craig has played a huge part.

"Also Kris George, Kris is a big part of my journey as a boxer.

"I train with him, I spar with him and he is always willing to help me in anyway he can.

"He's very knowledgeable about boxing.

"Also my manager Brendon Smith, he's just a great bloke - the kind of bloke you would want to go to war with.

"He has my best interests at heart at creates some great opportunities for me.

"His work happens behind the scenes but it doesn't go unnoticed from me that's for sure."

Hilt has earned a lot of respect in boxing circles, 1 for his no nonsense style in the ring and 2 - for being a gentleman outside it. He's not a big talker, preferring to let his actions do the talking.

Hard man, gentleman, working man or family man Jamie Hilt has earned his shot at State title glory. From humble beginnings in the outback town of Thargomindah which has a population of around two hundred on October 22 he could be on top of the State of Queensland.

To purchase tickets to watch Jamie Hilt's bid for the State title you can purchase them from Smithy's TGW Gym Monday to Friday between 3pm-8pm.
