NU's Yana Emilou De Vera dominates U1700 Asian Amateur Chess Championships in Hongkong

Hongkong, China ---Yana Emilou De Vera of the Philippines delivered a commanding performance in the Asian Amateur Chess Championships, Women's Under 1700 Standard division at the Kitty Stadium in Kowloon, Hongkong, China last Saturday, August 9,2025.

De Vera, one of the leading chess players of the multi-titled National University Chess Team under the guidance of coach National Master Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr., secured the title after drawing with compatriot Lila Alyssa Serina in the ninth and final round, finishing with 7.5 points, half point ahead with runner-up place Adina Baideldinova of Kazakhstan (7.0 points) and full point ahead with third placer Alyssa (6.5 points).

De Vera, Baideldinova and Alyssa each received 8,000 Hongkong Dollar, 6,500 Hongkong Dollar and 5,000 Hongkong Dollar, respectively.

"I am so very happy with my latest achievement," said De Vera.

De Vera defeated Hiu Ying Chan of Hongkong (Round 1), Chloe Amandine Tang of Hongkong (Round 2), Woman Candidate Master Asmi Aayat of Pakistan (Round 4), Jing Huang of Hongkong (Round 5), Zhenzhen Luo of China (Round 6), UA Disha of India (Round 7), and Yuetong Wu of China (Round 8).

She was beaten by Nayoon B Kim of South Korea (Round 3).

Other players who compete in the Under 1700 division were Maureinn Lepaopao of the Philippines (11th place), Joella Faye Conjurado (18th place), Elizsa Gayle Cafirma (22nd place) and Aaliyah Faith Campued of the Philippines (27th place).

Meanwhile, Woman FIDE Master Allaney Jia Doroy wound up second place in the Women's Under 2000 section with 7.0 points, the same output of eventual champion Enkhsaikhan Odmaa of Mongolia.
Odmaa won the gold medal, the top purse of 8,000 Hongkong Dollar and the title with superior tie break points with the runner-up place Doroy, who got the silver medal and the 6,500 Hongkong Dollar.

Jirah Floravie Cutiyog finished sixth place with 5.0 points.

Other division winners were Woman Candidate Master Nika Juris Nicolas (5th place, W2300), Woman National Master Bonjoure Fille Suyamin (6th place, W2300) and Giecel Pacubat (9th place, W2300).-Marlon Bernardino-
