PHOTOG PAULINO, SALITA PROMOTIONS WINS BWAA FIRST PLACE AWARD SHOOTING SALITA'S "BROOKLYN BRAWL"
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 28 Jun 2016

A picture speaks a thousand words, and a potent snap of action inside a boxing ring can speak even louder.
On Oct. 29, 2015 at the Aviator complex in Brooklyn, photog Marilyn Paulino, working ringside for Salita Promotions, caught a moment in time, as boxers Mikkel LesPierre of New York and Evincii Dixon clashed.
The picture tells part of a story, which ended when LesPierre had his hand raised after four rounds. But, actually, the book didn't close on that welterweight scrap. Because the Paulino pic won first place in the coveted Boxing Writers Association of America photography contest for 2015. Hundreds of entries were received, and the Paulino pic was deemed the best, pound for pound.
The Riverdale, NY resident offers background on the snap, and her involvement in the sport.
"It looks like it was posed, but it's actually a moment that happened in a split second," said the single mother to four kids, who works 9 to 5 in the IT department at a local college. "Those are my favorite types of shots because it's two athletes locked in, anticipating the other's next move while planning their own. Those images are a visual confirmation that for those two athletes in the ring, no one else exists. Even with thousands of cheering, screaming spectators in attendance. I love the intimate beauty of it."
As did the judges for the BWAA contest. Paulino picked up her award on Friday, June 7, at the 91st BWAA awards dinner, held at the Copacabana club in Manhattan.
"Our Brooklyn Brawl series provides entertaining intense action between very determined fighters," said promoter Salita, sharing his appreciation and happiness for the Paulino win. "Boxing has so many different facets and so many things happen in the ring so fast that it's hard to see all the ingredients of the sweet science. A great photographer like Marilyn is able to capture these special moments that words sometimes just can't describe."
