VALDEZ STOPS AVALOS AT THE COSMOPOLITAN LAS VEGAS By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 Sep 2015 Las Vegas, NV: Prior to the big dance tomorrow night at the MGM, Philboxing covered the Top Rank Promotions fight card at the classy Cosmopolitan Casino Hotel. Headlining the fight which was shown live on TruTV was former Mexican two time Olympian, Oscar Valdez Jr (18-0-0, 15KO) of Nogales Mexico versus Chris Avalos (26-4-0-19KO) of Lancaster, CA (top photo). The fight proved to be what it was advertised for - a true dogfight between two gallant warriors who thrilled the crowd from the first bell. The fight was a true combat in the traditional Mexican kind-of-a-fight. It was a constant exchange of punches with bad intentions. And, the crowd loved it! Valdez dropped Avalos in round three with a very impressive exhibition of combinations that were beautifully delivered. Then he began to dominate him in the succeeding rounds leading referee Russell Mora to stop the fight at 1:17 of round 5. Of course Avalos was not pleased but clearly it was just a matter of time because Valdez proved superior as the fight progressed. Hart vs Pryor. In the supporting main event, Jesse Hart (18-0-0,14 KO) of Philadelphia outlasted Aaron Pryor Jr of Cincinnati (19-10-1, 12KO) to keep his NABO USBA Super Middle weight crowns. The fight however was a far cry from the action and the finest exhibited by Valdez and Avalos. Boring could be an understatement- until the end part of round 9 when Hart cornered Pryor and rained punches on him that were unanswered leading the ref Tony Weeks to stop it at 2:51. Other results: 2012 Olympian light heavyweight gold medalist Egor Mekhontev (10-1-0,7KO) got up from the canvas to defeat Jackson Junior (18-4-0-16KO) by a UD. Scores were 77-73,77-74 and 77-74. Mike Reed (16-0-0,9KO) got Antonio Canas (10-2-1,4KO) really good in round one and with a slick body shot in round 5 dropped Canas for an 8 count. After Canas beat the count, Reed pummeled him leading ref Russell Mora to stop the fight. Thomas Smith (1-1-1) scored a UD over Frankie Winton (1-1-0, 1KO) . Winston was down in round 4.
