Nietes retained his WBO junior flyweight world title against Mexican challenger Gilberto Parra in the main event of PINOY PRIDE 30: D-Day at the historic Araneta Coliseum It was Nietes was pressed the action early in the fight while Parra was content with probing and countering. The Mexican went for the body in the second but Nietes connected with his left jab and overhand rights. It was Nietes? turn to launch a body attack in the third and Parra was eating right hands in the fourth canto. But Parra?s hard counters still made him dangerous. Nietes? lateral movement gave him excellent angles for punching that befuddled Parra. The champion began to land with increasing regularity in the fifth. But Parra surprised Nietes by rushing him at the start of the sixth. But Nietes regained his bearings and finished the round strong. Nietes took control of the seventh round with his accuracy. In the eighth, he knocked down Parra with a well timed right hand. The Mexican got up and started a hasty retreat which earned boos from the crowd. Referee Jack Reiss counts Parra as Nietes looks on. In the ninth round, quick one-two combos stunned Parra and sent him on the back foot. At the end of the ninth, Referee Jack Reiss called the ring doctor, who examined Parra, who was bleeding from a cut on his left eyebrow and reeling from a hail of head shots. Parra was obviously in no condition to continue and the fight was halted before the start of the tenth round. Nietes (35-1-4,21KO?s) will be facing mandatory challenger and former unified minimumweight champ Francisco Rodriguez of Mexico this July. The 32 year old Nietes? reign spanning two divisions will reach the seven year six month mark at the end of March. Fans and boxing scribes want to see Nietes move up to flyweight and fight WBC champion Roman Gonzalez or the WBO/WBA champion Juan Francisco Estrada.
