Laurente, Tepura Vie for Titles in Thailand
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Dec 2006
Two Filipino fighters close out the year and hope to do it with a big bang when they take on separate Thai opponents for important regional titles in different venues in Thailand.
Pan Asia Boxing Association (PABA) interim superbantam champ Pederito Laurente left for Bangkok this morning as he tries to unify his title against regular champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym on December 19 in Bang Khae, Thailand.
Laurente (17-10-1, 8 KO's) was accompanied in the three-hour trip by his manager Johnny Elorde and a trainer. The Filipino fighter was met by the Thai media and fight organizers upon arrival at the airport around noontime.
Laurente had won the interim title last year with a third-round technical knockout over China's Qi Mo Xiang, and defended it against Palman Shin later that year.
However, Laurente has been inactive this year, and ring rust might prove to be his major setback when he goes up agaist such a tremendous puncher in Poonsawat (25-1, 16 KO's).
Poonsawat was the long-reigning PABA bantam champ who captured the WBA interim title last year against Ricardo Cordoba, defended the title against Leo Gamez, before succumbing to his only loss at the hands of regular WBA champ Vladimir Sidorenko of Germany.
Meanwhile, Cebuano Pingping Tepura also goes for the big time when he takes on undefeated Thai Panomroomlek Kratingdaenggym on December 29 for the WBC Youth flyweight title in Saraburi, Thailand.
Tepura has been undergoing extensive preparations at the Wakee Salud gym as he hopes to dethrone Panomroomlek, who remains unbeaten in 15 fights with 8 knockouts.
