'RAPID FIRE' GONZALES CONGRATULATES JOAN TIPON PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Dec 2006 Pro fighter Glenn "Rapid Fire" Gonzales has nothing but praises for his former arch rival in the Philippine Boxing Team, Joan Tipon after the latter won the gold medal in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. Rapid Fire Gonzales, who once stopped Jo-an Tipon in the 3rd round of their amateur boxing match two years ago said that he had expected Tipon to barge into the gold medal round as Tipon is now ripe to defeat the best amateurs in Asia. "Before winning the gold, I know Joan will beat the boxers from Thailand, Korea and even from power houses Krgyztan and Kazakhstan," said Rapid Fire Gonzales. "He is a thinking boxer, moves really fast and got the perfect timing to land clear blows," admitted Gonzales who lost to Tipon on points in the first of their two outings. Gonzales got even with Tipon months after in Laguna when the referee stopped their bout in the 3rd round in one of the provincial sorties of the "Go for Gold" boxing program of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines. Rapid Fire Gonzales said he used frequent jabbing to open a nasty cut on Tipon's left eye brow. The fight was officially ended as Referee Stop Contest (RSC) due to injury and Gonzales was declared the winner. Despite winning against Tipon, Gonzales left the Philippine Team which puzzled the entire Philippine Boxing Team Coaching staff. "Di na ako nagpa alam sa kanila, may konting sama ng loob lang ako sa team pero happy na ako bilang pro at andyan na man si Joan na nagbigay ng karangalan sa bansa." Rapid Fire Gonzales had won silver medal in the 2003 Pre-South East Asian Games in Vietnam. All of his opponents were defeated by RSC (TKO in pro boxing) before he lost against a Vietnamese in the finals. " I floored the Vietnamese but I still failed to get the nod of the judges." Gonzales hopes that Tipon will quench the thirst of the Philippines for the Olympic gold. "Sana tuloy tuloy na yan hanggang 2008 Beijing Olympics." While hoping for the best for his former arch-rival, Rapid Fire Gonzales resumes his campaign in professional boxing. ?I want to give honor to the country this time as a professional boxer, I hope I could reach the level of Manny Pacquiao and Boom Boom Bautista." Last Saturday, this 21-year-old former amateur stand out won his third professional bout by stopping Fil-American William Jorge in the 4th round of their bloody encounter at the Mlang Municipal Gymnasium in North Cotabato. Gonzales who earned the monicker, "Rapid Fire"? because of one-hand six punch combination is scheduled to climb the ring again on January 21 in Midsayap, North Cotabato. |
