British Embassy launches Paralympics photo competition to uplift para athletes PhilBoxing.com Tue, 26 Jun 2012 With two months to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the British Embassy and the British Council, in cooperation with PhilSPADA-NPC Philippines and London 2012 world-wide partner Samsung, are launching the ?I Can? Photo Competition to celebrate the countdown to the greatest sporting event for athletes with disabilities. The British Embassy is spearheading this initiative to promote the Paralympic spirit of diversity and inclusion. The photo competition aims to raise the profile of disability sport in the Philippines, support PhilSPADA?s advocacy of helping Filipino para athletes and to promote aspirational messages to empower the differently-abled community in the Philippines. ?The Paralympic Games are the pinnacle of an athlete?s career and we hope they motivate others to participate or engage in Paralympic sports and help increase social awareness to help create a more inclusive world. This competition does not only celebrate the countdown to Paralympics, it also shines the light on disability sport at the grassroots level. We want to harness the opportunity the Games present to bring about a change in the way people think, feel and behave towards disability and disability sport to create a more open and inclusive society,? said British Embassy Charg? d? Affaires Trevor Lewis, speaking before journalists during the PSA Forum in Shakey?s UN Avenue on Tuesday. ?What makes the 2012 Games particularly special is that the Paralympics are returning to the country that established what was later recognised as the Paralympic movement. From its humble beginnings at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1948, the Paralympic Games have grown to become one of the largest international sporting events in the World and the London 2012 Games will be the most inclusive and accessible yet,? he added. PhilSPADA-NPC Philippines Chairman Mike Barredo welcomed the competition, and underscored the need to accelerate progress towards achieving disability equality. "It is our hope that the British people's spirit, love, and passion for sport as manifested by the conduct of the London Olympic and Paralympic games, shall inspire all Filipinos to be equally supportive of the plight of athletes with disabilities in the country, and encourage the lawmakers to fast track their inclusion through the passage of the bill amending RA 9064, otherwise known as National Athletes, Coaches And Trainers Benefits And Incentives Act Of 2001.? The competition is open to all residents of the Philippines, and welcomes both professional and amateur photographers. The contest theme is ?I Can?, highlighting the capabilities of differently-abled people to engage in physical sports as well as inspiring people of all abilities to adapt a more active, productive lifestyle. The photo should show physically-challenged individuals engaging in sports or demonstrating an active lifestyle and must have a title and a caption. Ten finalists will be selected by a panel of judges, and the winner will be chosen from the ten. There will also be special awards for the photo with the most votes and for the best published photo. All finalists will receive a mobile phone courtesy of Samsung. The overall winner and the special category winners will each win a Samsung tablet. The contest will run from 1 to 30 July. Finalists will be announced during the first week of August with the winners being announced at an award ceremony in the third week of August. Mechanics will be posted at the British Embassy website (http://ukinthephilippines.fco.gov.uk) on 30 June. ![]() |
