GM Joey Antonio ties for 10th in Canberra chess meet By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 07 Apr 2026 Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. finished in a tie for tenth place in the just ended 2026 O2C Doeberl Cup Premier Division at the Southern Cross Club, Woden Canberra, Australia on Monday, April 6,2026. "Tie for 10th place pero 12 overall tayo dito sa Canberra. Bawi tayo sa Sydney at Melbourne," said the 64-year-old Antonio, who won the gold medal in the 2025 World Senior Blitz Chess Championship in Gallipoli, Italy and took the silver medal in the 2025 Thailand Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Antonio finished the 9-Round Swiss System competition with 5.5 points on account of three wins, five draws and one loss. Also with 5.5 points were GM Temur Kuybokarobv of Australia, GM Jacek Stopa of Poland, CM Yuan Huang of Australia, FM Reyaansh Chakrabarty of Australia and FM Yifei Hubof Australia. After the tie break points was applied, Antonio finished overall 12 place. GM Guha Mitrabha of India scored 7.5 points to clinch the title, half point ahead with runner-up place FM Arteaga Alexis Vargas of Colombia who totes 7.0 points. GM Cristian Camilo Rios Gomez of Colombia, IM David Cannon of Australia and FM Albert Winkelman of Australia occupied 3rd to 6th spots with 6.5 points. IM Junta Ikeda of Australia, GM Azer Mirzoev of Azerbaijan, WGM Thi Mai Hung Nguyen of Vietnam and Harvey (Hanchen) Zhu of Australia have identical 6.0 points. Antonio defeated FIDE Master Michael Kethro of Australia in the first round , William Rumley of Australia in the third round, and FIDE Master Kai Joe Soo of Australia in the fifth round. He split the points with Candidate Master Justin Xia of Australia in the second round , Candidate Master Ryan Lane in the fourth round , Grandmaster Guha Mitrabha of India in the sixth round , Woman Grandmaster Thi Ma Hung Nguyen of Vietnam in the eighth round and FIDE Master Reyaansh Chakrabarty of Australia in the ninth and final round. His only loss was at the hands of Grandmaster Temur Kuybokarobv of Australia in the seventh round. Antonio is set to compete in the Sydney International Open (April 8-12), followed by the Melbourne International Open (April 14-19). Antonio's participation was supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by chairman/president Cong. Prospero Pichay Jr.; the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chaired by Alejandro Tengco; Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick Gregorio; Senator Bong Go; Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III; Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita 'Menchie' Aguilar- Abalos, Vice Mayor Anthony Suva, Congw. Queenie Gonzales, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte -Alimurung; Vice Mayor Gian Sotto; Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director General Tereso Panga; and Mr. Alvin Chu Teng of Cellboy. The Australian chess circuit campaign is a part of the preparation of the 13 Times Philippine Open Chess Champion Antonio who is scheduled to represent the country in the FIDE World Senior Chess Championships on November 2-15 in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia.
