MELINDO, BANAL GEAR UP FOR SINULOG EVENT PhilBoxing.com Wed, 30 Dec 2009 Two division regional champions, WBO Asia Pacific Minimumweight and WBA Intercontinental Light-flyweight title holder Milan “Melinyo” Melindo will attempt to annex his third crown when he moves up in weight to challenge WBC Youth Intercontinental Flyweight Champion Anthony Villareal of USA on January 14, 2010. The big boxing event dubbed as “Bakbakan Sa Sinulog!” is a joint venture between giant communication SMART Sports and TV5 with ALA Promotions to launch its entry to the sports of professional boxing. “PLDT and SMART big boss, Manny Pangilinan insisted that to ensure an exciting and evenly matched encounter he wants a Filipino to challenge for a title so as not to favor the local boy in the choice of an opponent”, disclosed Pato Gregorio, Head of SMART Sports Marketing and Special Projects. It is due to this unwavering condition that found the 21 years old Milan Melindo fighting as a challenger instead of a defending champion. When confronted of the situation, the undefeated ALA Boy stalwart confidently said, “I prefer it this way since it will give me a chance to fight for another weight division title. I like the challenge and the tougher it is – the better for me.” Touted as the next possible world champion from the fabled ALA stable, the diminutive Melindo is risking his unblemished fight record and his world ratings when he collides with the tough Mexican American Champion Anthony Villareal of California, USA. Known as the “Baby Assasin” the 22 yrs. old Villareal is a tough and rugged warrior who in his last fight, clobbered the undefeated and promising Mexican, Manuel Roman into submission enroute to winning a hard-fought split decision. Villareal has not lost in his last five fights and has only two losses in 11 fights and pride himself of never having been stopped. “I don’t think Melindo has the power to stop me so I will push him to the limit until he quits. I will pulverize him if he meets me toe to toe, ” assured the WBC Youth Champion when interviewed by ALA handler Edito Villamor at the Wild Card Gym where Villareal also trains. Unfazed by the boast of the Champion, Melindo however is not taking the awesome fighter lightly and will be fit and ready when he climbs the ring on fight date. In the main supporting bout, AJ Banal will again see action and continue his pursuit of a world crown when he trade mitts with the grizzled veteran “Cecilio “Boga” Santos who was a former 5 times regional WBO, WBC and WBA Champion. The 30 year old Mexican Santos has also fight four times for the world title against boxing icon Veerapol Sakraporn, Fernando Montiel, Dimitri Kirilov and Anselmo Moreno. He has also beaten the powerful puncher Luis Melendez, the same fighter who ended the boxing career of Z Gorres but who also lost the fight to the latter. Nothing less than a 3 nation international fighters will usher-in the inaugural presentation of SMART Sports and TV5 in association with ALA Promotions. Headlining the card is Anthony Villareal from California, USA and a Mexican, Cecilio Santos who will face AJ Banal. Two fighters from Thailand will add more glitter to the star-studded cast when fast-rising ALA boy James Bacon (13-1-0,8 ko’s) meets Thittichon Singwancha (12-3, 2ko’s) and KO artist Larry “Bonjovi” Canillas (11-1-0-10 ko’s) trade blows with Pet Twin Gym (8-3-1, 6 ko’s).
