NO WAY MAYOL CAN DEFEND TITLE VS OMAR NINO IN JANUARY
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Dec 2009

There is no way newly crowned WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol can defend his title against No.1 contender Omar Nino Romero on January 30 as requested by the Mexican promoters who already have the TV network and the site.
That’s the assessment of Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who told us that the date is too soon since Mayol who is in his hometown in Cebu for the Christmas season and won’t have enough time to train for the fight. Pacquiao and Koncz handle the career of Mayol after Pacquiao bought out Mayol’s contract from Japanese manager Yasuo Matsuoka.
There’s also been pressure exerted by some indviduals in media to get Pacquiao to schedule Mayol on the undercard of the planned Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr fight card which is supposed to take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 13.
However, Koncz told us that its easier said than done since even if he gets a fight it would have to be a non-title bout and they would have to get the approval of the Mexican promotional outfit which holds a one-fight option on Mayol following the fight in which the Filipino won the title from champion Edgar Sosa by a second round TKO.
It turns out that those who keep pushing for a Mayol fight on March 13 don’t even know that the Mexican promoters have an option which they have a right to exercise and even for a non-title fight the Mayol handlers would have to get approval from the Mexican promoters.
WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman in an email to Koncz said they have been “trying to confirm Mayol’s participation in the January 30 title defense against Omar Nino” stating that the television company and the venue “are desperate to get final confirmation as the fight is intended to start the year long celebraton of Mexican independence.”
