BANAL FACES TOUGH MEXICAN ON JAN. 14 SINULOG SLUGFEST

PhilBoxing.com

Highly-rated and world title prospect AJ Banal will face yet another acid test when he collides with rugged and dangerous Mexican Cecilio “Boga” Santos in the initial offering of SMART Sports and TV 5 in cooperation with ALA Promotion at the plush ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino on January 14, 2010.

“It is not just one of those easy fight that a winner is predictable. Banal is in for a tough fight and we meant it to be to find out if he is ready once again to challenge for the world title” disclosed Michael Aldeguer who handles Banal.

The young 20 years old Banal who hails from Barangay Ermita will be facing a grizzled veterans of 37 fights and one who has won five regional championship in different divisions from Super flyweight to Bantamweight of the world boxing bodies of WBC, WBO and WBA.

In addition to his fearsome accomplishment, the Mexican Cecilio Santos can also brag about his feat of having challenged no less than four times for a world title against boxing icons Fernando Montiel, Veeraphol Sahaprom, Dimitri Kirilov and Anselmo Moreno. He lost in three but managed a controversial draw against Russian Dimitri Kirilov.

It is noteworthy to mention that the wily Mexican Santos has beaten several world-class fighter including the powerful puncher Luis Melendez, the same fighter who ended the boxing-career of erstwhile ALA ward, Z Gorres. Although Gorres won the fight, it was unfortunately to be his last appearance in the ring.

Santos is fresh from a first round knockout over compatriot Cesar Martinez last Saturday, December 12, which should send a message to the handlers of the Cebuano warrior not take the Mexican lightly.

In the main feature, undefeated Milan “Melinyo” Melindo who is highly ranked by WBO #1, WBA and IBF #3 and #5 by WBC will move up in the weight to challenge WBC Youth Intercontinental Flyweight Champion, Anthony Villareal of the United States. It will be another blockbuster match-up between two high caliber protagonists.

Another two highly-competitive Thai ringster will do battle with Cebu’s fast rising Superfeatherweight James Bacon (13-1-0, 8kos) who will trade mitts with Thitichon Singwancha (12-3, 2 kos) and knock out artist Larry “Bonjovi” Canillas (11-1-0,10 kos) who is pitted against Petch Twin Gym (8-3-1, 6 kos).

Nothing less than a 3 nation international boxing extravaganza will usher in the entry of giant SMART Sports and TV5 Sports in cooperation with ALA Promotion in launching their initial salvo in professional boxing.

A strong possibility is the appearance of the five Filipino Boxing Gold Medalists in SEAGAMES in the same card.
