"INVASION" LAUNCHED FOR APRIL 6 AT BIG DOME PhilBoxing.com Wed, 19 Mar 2008 The long-awaited rematch between WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa and Ratanachai Sor Vorapin is set for April 6 and headlines an historic 8-bout event billed as "Invasion:Philippines vs The World" at the legendary Araneta Coliseum in Manila, home of the "Thrilla in Manila in 1975. "It is a sort of reunion of the World Cup. We are very excited to be doing the show," declared Golden Boy Promotions vice-president in a phone patch from Los Angeles. ALA Promotions's Michael Aldeguer, who graced yesterday's press conference, revealed that exciting fights await the fans in what is surely an explosive card where all fighters are expected to come in shape. The event, which will be attended either by Juan Manuel Marquez or Daniel Ponce De Leon, will be aired by ABS-CBN and will be presented by Golden Boy Promotions and ALA Promotions. Tickets for the said event are now available at all Ticketnet outlets in all SM branches and at the Araneta Coliseum box office. Penalosa (52-6, 35KO's) will defend his title for the first time since winning it with a thrilling knockout victory over Jhonny Gonzalez in the second edition of the World Cup (Mexico vs The Philippines) on August 11, 2007 against the durable Vorapin (71-9, 47 KO's), himself a former holder of the belt now owned by Penalosa. "Golden Boy Promotions is very excited about promoting an event featuring members of the World Cup Champion Team Philippines in front of their hometown fans on April 6 and to do it in the same stadium where Ali and Frazier fought the "Thrilla in Manila" is an honor," said Oscar De la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. The card will be broadcast live in the Philippines and the world via ABS-CBN global network (TFC) in USA, Europe, Middle East, Japan, Australia, Guam and Hawaii. Broadcast begins at 10AM RP time and 6PM Pacific time in the US. In the co-featured bout, WBO Intercon superbantam champion Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista defends his strap against gutsy Mexican Genaro Camargo (16-3, 10 KO's) in a 12-round bout. Another scorcher takes place when undefeated sensation AJ "Bazooka" Banal (16-0, 13 KO's) fights in a 12-round IBF superflyweight eliminator against unbeaten Uruguayan Caril Herrera (21-0, 13 KO's) in what appears to be "Fight of the Year" candidate. Another unbeaten fighter, WBO Oriental and Asia-Pacific superbantam titlist Ciso "Kid Terrible" Morales will defend his titles against South Korea's Yoo Shin Kim (6-1, 4 KO's). The other featured bouts will showcase RP bantam champ Michael Domingo vs Thailand's Thepnimit Sor Chitpattana and veteran Bert Batawang takes on Indonesia's Heri Amol.
