AUSTRALIAN PROMOTER WANTS TO STAGE RP-AUSTRALIA CUP By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 02 Jan 2008 Maniatis. Australia?s 2006 ?Promoter of the Year? Peter Maniatis wants to stage a Philippines vs Australia Cup on his TV KO Boxing Show in Melbourne and was scheduled to arrive in Manila today to discuss the project with Filipino promoters and managers and to meet with local boxers. Maniatis told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he had been ?in deep talks with TV producers at Channel 31? where he has hosted a boxing show for over five years and wants to show the Australian boxing public ?the skill and power Philippine boxers possess and the great match-ups that could happen? between fighters of both countries. Maniatis said Australian fight fans have seen over-matched Filipino boxers losing and as a result believe that Filipino boxers ?have power but not much skill.? He said the plan to stage a fight card in Melbourne featuring top-rated Filipino boxers against Australian prospects and fair 50-50 match-ups would help showcase the real talent of the Filipinos. Among the fighters Maniatis mentioned were Jimrex Jaca and Rev Santillan while among the Australians named were champion Matt Powell and Shannon McMahon. Maniatis said he planned to beam the fights ?live? to the Philippines via internet pay-per-view but was willing to have it staged in Manila ?if the Filipino promoters want to do it in the Philippines and have the television and the backing.? Maniatis said the people he would ?like to meet are Rex ?Wakee? Salud and Tony Aldeguer and as many Philippine national champions. The Australian promoter and TV host said he had chosen March 16 as the date with the venue being the Melbourne Town Hall. Maniatis said he?s been trying to get Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao to visit Australia and said Pacquiao could come out as a guest if he can set up the Philippines vs Australia Cup early this year. However, Maniatis failed to realize that the much-awaited Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez rematch will take place on March 16 (Manila Time) which rules out a visit by Pacquiao on that date and would also compete for attention and advertising revenues with the Philippines-Australia showdown. Maniatis also didn?t realize that the format for the World Cup of boxing which originally featured Mexico vs Thailand and then the Philippines vs Mexico had been copyrighted by Golden Boy Promotions and even forced promoters of a recent fight card between the Philippines and Japan to change its plan of a RP-Japan Cup to the ?Battle for Supremacy.?
