DISAPPOINTING TV RATINGS FOR ?PAYBACK?
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 06 Dec 2007

The television ratings for the ABC 5 coverage of the ?Payback? fight card headlined by ALA boys Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista and AJ ?Bazooka? Banal against Mexican opponents at the Araneta Coliseum last Sunday were disappointing despite the promotional hype.
The AGB Nielsen Media TV Meter data showed an average rating of 8.2 percent from 10:30 a.m. to 4:26 p.m. in Mega Manila although it rated higher in the suburbs at 9.6 percent.
The coverage of the PBA games which followed the boxing, also over ABC 5, had a steady 6.9 percent average in the suburbs but a lower 4.2 percent for the first game and a higher 6.3 percent for the second game in Mega-Manila.
The IBF/IBO flyweight title fight in which Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire scored an eighth round TKO over tough Mexican contender Luis Maldonado rated a 17.0 percent average in the telecast over GMA 7.
The ?Payback? ratings of the daytime fights were nowhere near the remarkable ratings of last February?s ?Moment of Truth? staged in Cebu City and featuring the WBO super flyweight title fight between Z ?The Dream? Gorres and undefeated Mexican champion Fernando Montiel which also had Bautista and Banal on the undercard.
The overall ratings of ?The Moment of Truth? which was telecast on prime time over the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN averaged a 28.10 percent rating and a very high 58.10 percent audience share.
The Gorres-Montiel main event rated 31.40 percent with an audience share of 62.0 percent while Bautista?s demolition of Marino Montiel Gonzalez rated 23.80 percent but delivered a huge audience share of 77.40 percent.
In the other fights on ABS-CBN Jimrex Jaca vs Indonesia?s Samson Butar Butar rated 28.60 percent with an audience share of 45.10 percent while Bert Batawang?s clash with another Indonesian, Sofyan Efendi, rated 26.70 percent and had an audience share of 65.60 percent.
