Pacquiao teaches Broner lesson in humility

PhilBoxing.com

This has been said and written many times before: That Manny Pacquiao is too good to be true. He?s more priest than pug, more altar boy than home boy.

You ever see a prizefighter like him? Even Jack Dempsey bragged a little. Joe Louis, too. Muhammad Ali brought opponent-insulting an art form, like referring George Chuvalo to ?washerwoman?, calling Sonny Liston as ?the big Ol? Ugly Bear.?

Liston once growled to an opponent ?if he runs, I?ll cripple ?im, if he come to me, I?ll kill ?im." Joe Louis, at one time, said, ?He can run, but he can?t hide.?

Not Manny, first of all, he talks above a whimper. He always says the right things ?. and softly at that. He seems almost wistful. He dresses decently, elegantly and clean befitting his stature as senator of the Republic and the only human in boxing history to own 11 world titles in eight weight divisions.

Pacquiao even has good words for guys he knocked into the seat of their pants. Pugs aren?t supposed to be like that.

Take, for instance the second stop of the press tour to promote his coming fight with American challenger Adrien Broner held a the Beverly Hills? Waldorf Astoria Hotel Wednesday (Manila Time) where the title pretender transformed to his usual controversial self from a silent, tame individual in the kickoff leg in New York.

On that day, the 29-year-old ?Cincinnati Kid? taunted Manny on his Asian Heritage, took issues with the media, drew gasps with reporters by making some very controversial remarks.

Known to the boxing world an habitual line crosser when it comes to hyping a fight and trash talk, Broner went even further than usual by making disgusting joke about Freddie Roach, who was reported as being considered as re-joining Team Pacquiao in his coming January 19 fight with him.

?You bringing Freddie back? Nah, I don?t have nightmares. I?m happy he bringing Freddie back so we can get this thing shaking,? Broner said in mocking the Hall of Fame trainer?s long bout with Parkinson?s disease of which some of the symptoms can be shaking and tremors.

The former congressman, probably, just smiled and shot back chuckling: ?Broner?s a funny guy. I think after his boxing career, he could have another career as a comedian. I don?t get upset about the jokes. I can?t help but laugh when I look at his face.?

After giving his opponent a brief lesson on humility, the Filipino boxing great went on to short of telling everyone that facing Broner in the same ring is an honor.

?He?s young and he?s fast ? and he?s fast with his mouth. There will be more action in the ring ? we know what the people want. It?s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a fight you will never forget,? Pacquiao commented.

Touching on the potentially fighting Floyd Mayweather again, he remarked: ?I don?t think Adrien will agree with that, because I need to pass through him. This is not an easy fight.?

?This fight is going to be a good fight. I have to pass through him before fighting Floyd,? he said. ?I want to prove to the boxing fans that Manny Pacquiao is still in the pack.?

When will the Mayweather rematch be?

?I can?t give you an answer, but if you ask me, it would be good for me to have that fight.?

Hinting he doesn?t intend to lose this fight set at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, the ?Pacman? said, ?You will see more fights with Manny Pacquiao here in the United States.?

?I continue my career as a boxer because boxing is my passion. When I hung up my gloves once, I felt sad not being in the ring and giving inspiration to people in the Philippines and boxing fans.?

On his decade and and-a-half fighting under Bob Arum Top, Manny had this to say: ?I have only good things to say about Top Rank ? they helped me a lot. But I?m really thankful to be partnered with Al Haymon and have a chance to work with him.?

Broner, who has more controversies in his name than world titles, appeared to be angry by all the talk that Pacquiao is looking to rematch Mayweather next year and wanted to press upon him that he has to worry about him first.

?January 19, I am coming to win. Screw the money, I?m going to be victorious. They keep talking about a Pacquiao-Mayweather 2, but I?m going to mess those plans up. I just don?t see Manny Pacquiao beating me,? Broner pronounced.

?He?s still in great condition. He?s trained his ass off. I have to keep my composure and stay focused on my game plan. But I?m not going to tell you what that plan is," he asserted.

Like Pacquiao, Broner said losing is never in his vocabulary. ?Hope isn?t my strategy ? there will be no luck. I feel like he can?t beat me. Look at my resume ? what do I do to southpaws? I stop them. Going into this fight, I?m very confident. I?m going to do what I always do to southpaws and dismantle him.?
