PhilBoxing.com Fri, 31 Mar 2017
Canoy (26-6-2,19 KOs) weighed in at 116 pounds while Magwaca (17-0-2, 10 KOs) weighed 116.6 pounds, Weigh-in was at the Oliver Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
Canoy: ?I?m thankful for this opportunity and will assure all of a good fight,? Canoy said.
Magwaca: ?I was born ready,? drawing the cheers of the hometown crowd.
Canoy is around three inches shorter than Magwaca who has a typical African slender and tall frame. Magwaca is expected to use his boxing skills to stay away from Canoy, while Canoy is looking to pressure the local favorite.
Da ja vu? A local boxing official said that a Filipino won in the same venue before. In 2004, Bert Batawang (also of Cebu) knocked out Sithembile Kibiti in the seventh round to win the WBA Pan African light flyweight championship. The South African official said Batawang was behind on points when he caught Kibiti and knocked him out cold.
Other weigh-in highlights: The weigh-in and press conference also featured the co-main event, the women?s WBF bantamweight championship between Bukiwe Nonina (10-3) South Africa and Alesia Graf (29-5) of Germany who weighed in at 116 and 117 pounds, respectively.
The other highlight of the fight is a charity bout between former heavyweight contenders Uwe Huck of Germany and Francois Botha of South Africa. Huck is the principal sponsor of the fight card that seeks to raise funds for the local boxing community. He is donating boxing equipment to the Khayelitsha community, one of the low-end residential communities located on the outskirts of Cape Town. Also on hand to help promote the event is former heavyweight contender Axel Schulz of Germany. -- Rico Navarro
