“The Hurricane” to strike Las Vegas!!! By Angelo Reyes PhilBoxing.com Sat, 01 Sep 2007 Oakland, CA -- In an effort to continue her goal of placing women’s boxing on the mainstream map, Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton has decided to make the leap and turn to the professional ranks. Ana who was still at a cross roads as of July made the decision after speaking with her good friend and trainer Freddie Roach. “Freddie is the best and I listen to his advice especially when it comes to boxing… Coach suggested to me last year to turn pro, but my heart wasn’t in it, I truly believed by staying amateur I was making a difference in being able to help women’s boxing become an Olympic sport for 2008, but after my last experience with USA boxing I decided it would be best for me to move on.” said the boxer with her wonderful smile. The experience she talks about is the 2007 US Championships where Ana received the silver medal, after yet again being subjected to very questionable judging. Ana talks about it with a heavy heart “I truly was disappointed in not bringing home the “Gold”, when I’m in the ring I always feel I’m fighting for more than myself, I fight to represent both my countries (Philippines/USA), my Dojo (West-Wind Schools), my team, my fans and for the entire world of women’s boxing to get some respect…I did my very best, I left it all in the ring that day. Coach (Freddie) told me not to worry about it and that computer scoring doesn’t make sense. That took a lot of weight off my shoulders and I feel that my true fighting style can be utilized now in the pro arena.” The style that she is referring to is the reason why her fans love to watch her fights. “The Hurricane” at times is a non-stop, action packed, let’s get down and throw bombs type fighter, but has always been able to put on a show with her excellent counter punching and will even smile at her opponents during a match when dominating a bout. When do you ask is her Pro Debut? Mandalay Bay Event Center, Las Vegas on the under card of Pacquiao vs. Barrera October 6th. Talk about opening the door for women’s boxing. This is like being drafted in the NFL in the 1st round and having your first game be in the Superbowl! How does she feel about her debut? “I’m truly honored to be a part of Golden Boy Promotions for my first fight. Eric Gomez and his staff have been so kind to me. They are truly a 1st class organization and I’d like to thank them for giving me this great opportunity…. I still can’t believe that I’m fighting on the same place as my “Kuya” Manny…and I just adore Freddie Roach. He truly is an inspiration to me.” Says the humble Hurricane. In finishing the interview Julaton added, “I’d like to give a special thanks to Dr. Ed De la Vega and his staff! He has always supported me from the beginning, I love my new mouthpieces and my continued thanks goes out to him for his efforts to help promote the sport of Philippine boxing!!” Ana has broken a lot of barriers (and a few hearts) along her journey and will continue to do so (Highest ranking Filipina in the History of USA Boxing), but this writer feels that the biggest wall she always seems to breakthrough is the one to the heart!! Whether it’s in the ring with her punches, to her Philippine community with her dedication to them or to her many fans and admirers with her signature smile. Like so few before her Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton is truly a new hope for the sport of women’s boxing and all Filipino’s. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Angelo Reyes. |
