Kelvin Watts Highlights Day Two of World Boxing Championships for Team USA

Watts Advances to 90+ kg Round of 16 With Dominant Win

LIVERPOOL, England (September 5, 2025) – The United States closed out day two of the 2025 World Boxing Championships inside M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England. Team USA suffered two defeats in their opening session but bounced back with a win in the second session. Kelvin Watts righted the sails for the Stars and Stripes with a 4-1 win over Lithuania’s Algirdas Baniulis after swaying the judges in the first and third rounds of the 90+ kilogram division matchup.

Watts exploded to a terrific start and swayed four judges with 10-9 scores after the opening three minutes. Despite losing a point in round two, he maintained his composure and found his footing again in the third round with 10-9 scores across the board to earn a statement victory in his tournament opener.

Throughout the matchup, Watts was able to land many devastating blows that forced his Lithuanian foe to crowd the American Super Heavyweight. Watts handled the tactic perfectly and outmuscled his opponent to create the space needed to deliver his powerful straight right hand. His ability to control the ring allowed the Chesapeake, Va., native to overcome a point deduction in the second round and bookend the fight in the first and third rounds.

Also in action for the United States on Friday were a pair of women’s boxers, Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) and Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio). Mendoza was defeated by Colombia in her 57-kilogram matchup, while McCane suffered a setback in her 65-kilogram bout against England.

Heading into day three of the 2025 World Boxing Championships, the United States has 12 boxers in contention for gold medals. Saturday’s slate will feature five Americans in action throughout the day.

Jennifer Lozano will lead off for the United States in Saturday’s opening session and will square off against India’s Zareen Nikhat in Ring A, bout three, at approximately 6:30 a.m. ET. Naomi Graham, the women’s 75-kilogram contender and a 2020 Tokyo Olympian, will take the ring later in that same session against Spain’s Dunia Martinez Mas in Ring B, bout seven, beginning at approximately 7:30 a.m. ET. Carlos Flowers will close out the opening session for the United States with a men’s 70-kilogram bout against Jordan’s Zeyad Eashash in Ring A, bout 10, starting at approximately 8:15 a.m. ET.

Session two will feature two American athletes, beginning with Jajaira Gonzalez, the women’s 60-kilogram boxer and a Paris 2024 Olympian. Gonzalez will take on Slovakia’s Miroslava Jedinakova in Ring B, bout three, at approximately 1:30 p.m. ET. Ramon Ordonez will close the day for the Red, White and Blue with a bout against a Paris 2024 Olympian, Brazil’s Luiz De Oliveira, in Ring B, bout 10, at approximately 3:15 p.m. ET.
