Kelvin Watts Charged Up for 2025 World Boxing Championships

Team USA’s Super Heavyweight Prepared to Assert Himself as a World Champion

LIVERPOOL, England (September 5, 2025) – Athletes are often motivated by a sense of purpose from the first day they embark on their competitive journey. While some athletes are fortunate to identify their sport early, that is not always the case for some competitors. At first thought, one might assume that world-class athletes are those fortunate enough to find their sport early on in life.

However, Kelvin Watts is part of that athletic minority that found his calling later in life. As an athlete, Watts is no stranger to being labeled an “outlier.” In addition to being a physical outlier as a super heavyweight competitor, he also relates to that term as someone who picked up the sport after completing a collegiate football career.

For most football players, the ultimate goal is to earn a spot within the National Football League (NFL). After completing his collegiate football career, Kelvin set his sights on a life off the gridiron, and he did it with uncertainty about what his future held. It was at this time in his life that boxing, as the sport often does, saved him and provided him an opportunity to tackle another athletic endeavor.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do about two years ago with my life, and I walked into a boxing gym,” Watts proclaimed about his entrance into the sport.

Many boxers dedicate their entire lives to the sport in the hope of one day representing their nation at the highest levels of competition. Unfortunately, while many boxers put in tireless hours of incredible work, only a select few can achieve the feat of competing with the Stars and Stripes on their chest. Only a handful of competitors can claim national titles each year, and even fewer are invited to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., which is home to many outliers.

Few athletes are built like Watts, who, after just two years of high-level competition, earned a spot on the 2025 USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team. The 6-foot-3 boxer was invited to the USA Boxing Selection Camp earlier this year after claiming a national title at the 2024 National Championships within his home state of Virginia.

After excelling at Selection Camp, he remained hungry to display his talents to the masses as the USA’s 2025 90+ kilogram competitor. Once again, he was met with an opportunity. Despite all that he had already achieved so early in his career, he continued to work and prepare for his slate of 2025 international competition, which featured tournaments in Brazil, the Czech Republic, and England.

The international level is challenging for any boxer, but the super heavyweight division is once again reserved for the outliers. Boxers must have the physical stature to compete, the power to inflict damage, and the mental fortitude to take a punch from competitors that are larger than life.

In his first international tournament bout, Watts rose to the occasion and defeated a 2020 Olympian from Brazil and closed that competition with a bronze medal. While he departed that competition proud, he immediately turned his focus to the World Boxing Challenge in Usti Nad Labem, Czech Republic. There, he collected another bronze medal, once again proving that he belongs among the world’s best.

As he moves into the final few months of 2025, Watts is once again pushing the boundaries of his boxing career. He is just days away from competing at the largest Olympic-style boxing event ever, the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England. There, he will face some of the world’s most talented super heavyweight boxers, several of whom competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I’m feeling great and I’m ready to win,” Watts stated while previewing his appearance at the World Championships. “I get to put my talent on the world’s stage. I feel like God has really blessed me.”

Once again, he will have the opportunity to prove himself an outlier in the sport at the highest level of competition. While this tournament will serve as key markers for many Olympic-style boxers, including Watts, he pursues a world championship with the same hunger and appreciation that he has for each of his previous competitions.

“It means the world to me, and I won’t take it for granted at all,” Kelvin stated about the opportunity to win a world title. “You’re going to get it all, and I’m going to win gold.”

Kelvin’s journey in the 90+ kilogram division at the 2025 World Boxing Championships will begin during Friday’s second session. He will take on Lithuania’s Algirdas Baniulis in Ring A, at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET.

The World Boxing Championships will be hosted inside M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England, from September 4 to 14. Each day of the competition will be broadcast live on the World Boxing YouTube Channel. For further details regarding the World Boxing Championships, fans can head to WorldBoxingLiverpool.com.
